MG TD TF 1500 - Latest accessory - a Raydyot light

Hi all:
Here is a pix of the latest accessory for my TF - a Raydyot spotlight.

Hi Again . . .
and a pix of Tiffany at the fist show of the year.

Nice looking car. I like the Raydyot. Have one for my YB. Larry

What is the decision, mount it on the side that has the wiper power hole already there. Or on the drivers side where it's most useful but you have to drill a hole for the power wire? (LHD cars).
Cheers,
Bob

A very beautiful TF John. You have much to be proud of. Is the Raydyot wired separately and directly? Spotlights are typically used when the car's not moving down the road, even though engine might be running, so how much is being drawn off the battery when in use?

John,
Cool...let's go snipe hunting!
(Mine works off a "pre-select" toggle & the "aux" switch.)
Nice car ...like the amber fog also.

Bob,
No "wiper power hole" on a TF.
(Mine went where there was a chip/flaw in the new paint job!)

So what is the consensus on the pronunciation of Raydyot? I've got a couple of Raydyot mirrors on a racecar and I'm never sure--

Is the second "y" silent, as in Ray-Dot?

Or do you pronounce it, as in Ray-di-ot?
David Littlefield

I say "Ray-Dot" ...but I live out here in Hootersville ....Folks out here "warsh" their "tars" when they "warsh" their "kar" in "Nerk". (spelled Newark).
David Sheward

I love the looks of that light. Our modern world has moved away from giving an individual piece, such as this light, style.
Bruce Cunha

John,
Curious to see how you mounted yours.
Looks like you did not want to drill the windscreen.
Nether did I, but that is what I have seen most do.
Like I said ...I had a small flaw in my paint job so it was kind of a no-brainer for me.
Here is how I did mine:

David Sheward

John,
Far as turnning it on.
The toggles marked "AUX ENGAGE" in yellow on this pannel are my "pre-select". Any of them in "up" then come on when I pull the "aux" switch on the dash.
(In this pic "L Fog" is selected.)
That one is a driving lamp on my car, right one has a fog lens.
Left to right on my pannel:
NOS(fuel pump) / reversing lamp / Map lamp / Hunting / fogs / Heater/Fan
The red indacator Lucas switch turns on the Banana switch far right. I have a few period work & parking lights and a tea kettle that plug into it. Can't see it well in that pic ...but there is a little "pig-tail" plugged into the hot side for under the bonnet lights mounted to my battery hold bar. One lights the dizzy and other the carbs nicely.
Cig lighter on bottom right for GPS/Cell.
Black toggle in middle was added later for windscreen wipers. (I have locking glove-box doors.)
Under side of the panel has extra fusing I added to the car.
The little amber lamp on top of the pannel comes on with my dash lamps so I can see them at night.

So far has worked pretty good for me. It's tucked under the dash where few have even noticed it.

Obviously if all were on at same time it would be quite the load on the genny!

David Sheward

David:

Here is a top-view diagram of how I mounted the light to the windscreen bracket. Hope you can make sense out of it.

When installed it looks like the short screw goes through the windscreen bracket but in fact it only goes into the adapter plate that I made from polished stainless steel. The screw labeled Longer is countersunk into the bracket.

Hi All:

The light is not yet wired since I am looking for a short stainless armored cable and the length of that will determine where the wires go and if I drill a hole or not.

Raydyot made a switch but they are hard to find so I will add a toggle under the dash.

The spot-lamp puts our so little light I think that it is immaterial if it is on the driver's or the passenger's side. Some chaps install one on each side but this is too much bling for my taste.

The reason I wanted one comes from having seen a movie when I was a kid. It was an old English thriller about a hero who drove an MG (TA?)through the fogged-in streets of London; kind of a more modern Jack-the-Ripper. His passenger worked the spotlight, which magically cut through the fog, trying to locate the number of the house the killer was supposed to be at. Suddenly the spot-light illuminates the mutilated face of the latest victim. Very scary when you are 9 or 10. I would love to see it again . . . has anyone else seen it and do you remember the name?

Very neat mount. When you get time you should put a close-up pic of it on here. Over the years quite a few have come here looking for an alternative to drilling through the windscreen. I have seen armor sheathing at Jegs, if they are up there.
I used black nylon mesh...if you decide to go that route let me know and I'll send you some.
David Sheward

"The spot-lamp puts our so little light" ...you sure it has the correct bulb and/or was fully grounded?
Mine is quite bright.
David Sheward

David:

No, I am not sure about the bulb . . . never looked . . . but it probably is the wrong one. I just tried it in the shop by touching each wire to a battery.

Any chance you might know the bulb number of your light?

Jc
John Crawley

Not off-hand ...but I will try to remember to open it up today and let you know. Should be the right one as the light I got was NOS in box and had never been installed. A friend in the UK found it and mailed to me with a note saying I owed him $35.00. I'm still smilling at that one!
David Sheward

John,
Name at top of base, first 3 letters a little hard to read...looks like:
NADYANI / UN9 / 12V-60W / BRITISH MADE

Pretty sure it is the orginal bulb.
I do most my snipe hunting with night vision heat sight now, so haven't used it much!

That's a Quarter in the shot for scale.

David Sheward

You guys are getting me all fired up to install my
Raydot light. I sent a lefthand windshield bracket out to be replated and it hasn't come back yet. Have to check on that. The rest of the light is in good shape.
Cheers,

Bob
