MG TD TF 1500 - Leaky Girling Shocks

Try this again, my system went down, and I just got it back to find only part of my post went through. Anyway, short version of my problem is one of my rear shocks is leaking at the shaft, has anyone had any luck replacing the shaft seals? I have heard that NAPA part #8637 will fit, but I am reluctant to pull the lever off unless someone has had experience with them. To all the wags out there that replied to the partial post, it is comforting to know yopu can read!! HHOK!

KS - While you may be able to get a seal to fit, the job is a miserable one to do and then when you get it all back tgether, there is a 50% chance it will still leak (been there, done that, not going to do it again!). A much better approach is to send the shocks to Peter Caldwell at World Wide Auto Parts of Madison <http://www.nosimport.com/> and have him do a complete rebuild of the shocks. It will cost a lot more than doing it yourself, but the advantage is that if he screws the shcok up, he make it good for you and he provides a lifetime warratee - if it ever leaks, he repairs it for free (been here and done it, and it is great!). To show you the length that Peter goes to insure that your shcok is fixed properly, one of the rears he did for me started to leak (just a bit) after several years and I sent it back to him. The leak was so small that, while he could see that it was leaking, he couldn't find exactly where it was coming from. He e-mailed me and explained the situation and said that he would find and fix the problem, but it might take a while. He then attached the shock ot a wall where everyone from World Wide Auto Parts passed during the day and instructed that every time some passed the shock, they were to cycle the lever a couple of times. With that method, he finall got enough oil out of the leak to pinpoint it and get it fixed and back to me in about a month. That is dedication to the customer! and the reason I keep going back to him. Good luck - Dave

Dave I appreciate your info, it appears everyone else shares your experience, so I know which way to go. When I got them off the car, I thought it would be a bear of a job to replace the seals, which I dont mind if it works, but I have better things to do than tackle jobs and still have the same problem at the end of it. Thanks all.
