MG TD TF 1500 - Leather Steering Wheel Cover
Gentlemen, I know that there are black leather steering wheel covers available for our cars, but I really want a brown leather cover, that would be a closer match to the biscuit coloured interior of my TF. Does anyone know of a source? Gene |

Have you tried a Google Search ???? There are quite a few out there,,,,, |

If you search for 'italian leather steering' in eBay you'll see a seller that can produce covers in brown leather. He only advertises black but he replied to a question of mine to make in another colour favourably. |

Gene, take your wheel to an upholstery shop. They can cover it with leather of the colour you want and it is not that expensive. Had it done last summer to my TD wheel and I'm very pleased with the result. Jasper, on one of my B's, I have a cover as shown in your pic too. I think it will not be large enough for a T- Type wheel and you can not decide what quality and thickness of the hide material will go on the wheel. Ralph |

Ralph, They do sell 16 1/4" x 2 3/8" (41 x 6 cm) for TD, so that's no problem. However, I don't know about 'quality and thickness of the hide material'. Jasper |

I tried to search hi and low, did find an outfit that would make me a custom cover but it would run about $400. So...i bought a book that taught leather stitching, got a bunch of perfect color match leather from Moss for my bisquit interior, and made my own using a baseball stitch pattern. Also did the passenger side grab rail. Came out very well. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb188/lrutt/1953%20MG%20TD/IMG_6285.jpg |

NICE JOB !!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The fellow who did our upholstery (a shop) made a cover for us. He also did the seats in the same leather, and all the carpeting, side panels, no "kits", etc. |

Because I'm running 185's rather than 165's and the steering effort is much higher at low speeds, I wanted a larger steering wheel with more leverage. So I found an old Jaguar wheel, then I went on to eBay and looked for LEATHER STEERING WHEEL COVERS and found a shop in Texas that would sew the cover to the specs I sent her. She sent it back to me in about three weeks, I sewed it on with a whip stitch, then soaked it in the bathtub in warm water for a few days in order to shrink it, then oiled it with canola cooking oil. It's not stock, of course, but it turned out very well. The woman I dealt with doesn't appear to be an eBay supplier anymore, but I did see a product called WHEELSKINS that has a custom order system similar to the way I did it. I paid about $50.00 for a custom cut, so these seem to be similar. Hope this helps a little, Dave |

Here's another shot of it before it went into the car. The wrinkles came out when I soaked it. |

Gene, I had a leather cover made to order by Wheelskins. http://wheelskins.com/original_wheelskin.php They made it to measure and they have a nice variety of colors. I hate the skinny rim on the origional type TD/TF wheel and the cover makes it a bit more comfortable. I have been extremely happy with this product. It is the same one that Moss shows in their catalog, but they only have black. |

Gentlemen, Thanks so much everyone! Mr.'s Rutt and Parker, My TF is the same colour combination as your pictures and you have achieved the exact look I was hoping for. Many thanks! I'm off to convince my Bride that I need to invest a little more more money into our favourite ride. I believe I have the patience and the skills to do the job myself. Thanks again! Gene |

I looked at wheelskins but you had to take the colors they offered, which did not match my bisquit interior. And I wanted to retain the very slender profile of the original wheel, not too much padding. Moss was very helpful in getting me some leather of the color I needed for a perfect match. that was important to me, to have the color match so it looked integrated. A wood wheel would have been too much with the wood dash. Lots of options out there depending on what you want though. |
