MG TD TF 1500 - LED ID

About a year or so ago I bought some LEDs for my TD.
I now want to order a few more but I cannot remember where I got them. I've looked through 1000 receipts to no avail.
Can anyone identify them?
TIA,
Mort

Hi Mort,

Anthony Pearson is good mate of mine and he makes and markets LEDs worldwide. I don't know if he supplied the examples in your image but I know he specialises in T-Types. His email is apearson@chariot.net.au

He is a genuine MG enthusiast (and club member). He personally has restored his TC, Y-Type and Magnette, and his family has a TD and various other MGs. In fact, I am sure I am correct in saying that he set the (very high) standard for MG restorations in Australia.

I just bought a pair of front sidelight inserts from him for my TC. They show white light for sidelights but when the indicators are turned on, they flash a BRIGHT YELLOW light and the white sidelight TURNS OFF while the yellow light is flashing! SENSATIONAL FOR SAFETY AND LEGALITY! I intend to get a pair of his headlight globes too.

I think he works with Little British Car Company and many others but I am sure you can deal with him direct. He deals with all sorts of other LUCAS stuff too. Voltage regulators, switches, etc. He is a VERY knowledgeable MG electrics man!

Classic Car LEDs in UK, is on Ebay also.

What application is it front or back, looks the the 1157 from rear to me.

Very reasonable price, if rear get RED.

The correct email for Anthony Pearson is acpearson@chariot.net.au

I design and manufacture LED inserts for most British cars up to 1962. These are not bulbs, but purpose built light boards specific to the particular lamp model. Less expensive and brighter than most.

Thanks Tim. You are correct with Anthony Pearson's email address. Mine was missing the "c". I must be getting a bit sloppy!

When 12 V is applied to each side of a dual "filament" LED one side burns brighter then the other. Does the dimmer side go to the running lights and the brighter side go to the brake and indicator lights?
Thanks,

Yes.
The brighter side is Stop and Directionals.

I have successfully identified the supplier for the above mention LED. I found the plastic bag that they came in. That is my very high-tech filing system.

Just a comment about this bulb versus all the others that I have found.

Most bulbs are an exposed column of LEDs. The torque required to insert bulb into the fixture is enough to destroy the bulb.

The bulb from this supplier it is a complete metal sleeve with a glass dome in front. Virtually indestructible. These bulbs are extremely bright.

Mort, that bulb looks like it only shines out of the end. Wouldn't that produce a small pattern in a side light housing? I have converted all of the bulbs on my 51TD to LEDs. They are the exposed kind that you cited. I didn't have any issues with damage while inserting them. But I'm always looking for new technology. Could you comment on what appears to be a single beam of light in your bulb and how that compares to the multi faceted led bulb? Especially in the side and stop lights. Thanks

Here is one of the Tail Lamps I got from AS.
While it does not have a glass bulb, the metal frame is very strong. Note that it has both side illuminating LEDs and end illuminating LEDs.

I used AS parts all over and I used their flasher. The conversion was effortless, ----almost.
My front side lamps had one inline holder and one ofset holder.
I had to change one of the holders. It was a bit of a chore and then the front lamps were very very difficult to lock in place.

Once done everything worked fine.

Jim,
Those bulbs look better than most and look like an excellent choice.

Tim,
I understand your concern and I thought of this also at the beginning of the project. If you consider the geometry of both the front and rear housings you will see that any light emitted from the sides of the bulb do not directly project in the direction intended. I do understand that some of the light from the sides could be reflected off the inside of the fixture. In both the front and rear fixtures the reflective quality of the inside surface is extremely poor.
I am not an expert in LED technology but I can tell you empirically that the diode used in the front of my bulbs is extremely bright.

I hesitate to jump in again, as I am the designer and manufacturer of a competing technology to that of LED bulbs. However, it has already been raised that LED light is very directional, which is true. It is also true that the white light is made up of a broad spectrum. Therefore, there are two reasons why the commonly available LED bulbs are not the best choice.
1) The majority of the individual LEDs are facing the side, not in the direction you want the light aimed.
2) If the color of the light is not the same as the color of your light lens, a significant amount of the light is filtered out by the lens. Pure light is made up of a broad bandwidth spectrum of light, but a colored lens will filter out all but that color, thus losing usable light.

Granted, an LED bulbs is often better than an incandescent bulb, but not the optimal solution.

Mort, thanks. I only asked because the LED bulbs I have in the front side light show about six pin points of light when you look closely when they are illuminated. They are plenty bright enough but I had a guy look at my sidelight when it was illuminated and say oh, you have LEDs. I just wondered if your bulbs showed a very bright pin point of light behind the lens when they were illuminated. I have painted the inside of my light fixtures with chrome paint and it helps. Thanks again.

After reading this thread, I am becoming increasingly more convinced that the time to convert my 64-year old TF to a negative earth, is at hand. I know that + earth LEDs are available, but are comparatively rare when compared to the more normally accepted negative earth.

I am an absolute stickler on lighting because I drive my MG frequently at night, and safety is more important to me now, that is was when I was in my care-free 20s.

I have an electrical engineering background, but somehow, the process of making such a dramatic change, seems so contrary, but everybody that has done it, says its straight-forward and not to worry; but I do worry, since it sounds much too easy, especially the process of “flashing over”. I have visions of frying my generator.

Where can I find definitive information on how to make the change? Is there anything unique to the T-Series that I should know? What about my pertronix? The rumour mill says that the fuel pump needs modification. Etc, Etc.

Has anybody put LEDs in a Triple M MG?. My PA while already negative earth, will get up-graded lighting

Gord,

I disagree.
There is no longer a short supply of LEDs and flashers for positive earth. That alone is not a good reason to make the switch and contend with the issues involved in that project.

If you need suppliers for LEDs and flasher just let me know.

Gord, here's a pretty good description on how to switch polarity.
