MG TD TF 1500 - License bracket clamp needed

One of the few parts missing (on both sides) from my 53 TD are the clamps at the ends of the spare tire carrier.

See the picture.

I've looked in the usual places and can't seem to even find it in the exploded views available on-line (Moss). It's a small part so it's easy to miss, maybe I have.

Does anyone know where I might find a pair - or - is there a suitable look-alike replacement? Obviously, the screw clamp applied by the PO isn't OEM.

Could someone post a good photo? Thanks.

I would have to measure, but you might get away with Moss #263-320, which is the chrome clamp for the steering wheel extender.

Try Hugh Pite. jenntoo@shaw.ca
I don't have a decent picture for you because the luggage rack brace is in the way on my car.
Jim Merz

I measured the steering clamp. It's about 1/8" too large. That was a good idea though cause it's available.

You might get away with steering wheel clamp if you place a piece of split PVC pipe over the bar where you are fitting the clamp. Might take some manipulation so the pipe is hidden from view.

I believe Anglo Parts are depicting the correct items(No 26) on Page 49 0f their TD/TF Catalog.

Graeme,

That's it - but it's N/A. We're zeroing in on it though. Thanks for the lead on the catalog house, great find. The steering clamp and a shim (perhaps a split stainless steel collar) is not a bad idea.

New image below, #26.

BTW, my youngest son was a H.S. student ambassador (U.S.A. State Dept.) to Australia about 10 years ago. 20 kids on a 3 week trip from Melbourne to Sidney. I'll have to pay a visit sometime, he said your little island is spectacular. He did the bridge, of course.

You may want to try a bicycle shop for an old time gooseneck clamp.

C.R.... 5 minutes ahead of you. Found it on Amazon of all places. 1", looks about right. Only an expert will know the difference.

See picture.

So. Were these painted, chrome or ?.

M. Andrus

M, I think this is what you want. There's one on each end, one for the tag holder and one for an end plug. On my TD they are painted. I looking to see if I have an extra. The clamp appears to be cast with the hole on the back side threaded for the clamping bolt. Jud

Yep, that's it. It will be hart to find one that has the bolt intersecting the pipe like this. I assume this was done to keep it from turning.

Once I install the luggage rack, it shouldn't twist.

There is another clamp available and it is the one that clamps the vent tube to the engine side cover. It is close to 1".

Moss's site doesn't spec the size. I've got cast aluminum covers and a rubber hose off the top of the valve cover, can't check.
M. Andrus

I just bought one for my TD. I will go and measure it.

Vent tube clamp is close to 1-1/8", and is a very light gauge clamp... so I am thinking it may be unsuitable for the licence bracket. The one Jud has a picture of, is the correct clamp for the bracket. If you can't find a replacement, you might be able to get a machine shop to make a replacement. As noted above , I would give Hugh Pite a try for this part.

I have a pair which are surplus for me and yours if you are interested. Contact me off board to confirm your details.
