MG TD TF 1500 - Little missing bits
I have lost some parts whilst transiting 'the beauty' from its former home and getting it built up and running. I mentioned the front bumper bolts on another thread but I also need the little plastic bits that edge the overiders in back. They were removed to place the auxiliary towing tail lights while the entire front bumper came off for the towing rig. As I say, it IS on the road with its new Skyhook 5-speed and the roller cam. It gets rubber in first AND second. I have it parked out in front of my woods-hidden house with papers tucked in the windscreen. It is not for sale but I am advertising a house concert series in my house and some of the people who stop have responded. John Redman |

john, i have been told those little rubber bits for the over riders were not original to the cars. regards, tom |

The rubber bits were not original but I used cut some from a length of VW Bug rubber. Forgot where it was supposed to fit on a bug, maybe bumper guards. |

I don't use the rubber bits, but if you get a bit of hose (tubing) at the hardware store and split it length-wise, it should work. Hmmmm Clear might actually work pretty good too. I know, a lot of people use rubber bits, and it gets to the point where people think they are original... warmly, dave |

Hi John Have at least three of the rubber bits you may need (at least that is what my inventory says). I purchased a bunch some time back as I use them on the TD and the B. Also have one chrome bumper bolt. |

John, If you are looking for the rubber pieces that fit on the over riders between the bumper, Moss has them quite cheap. They are not the same as original ( they were made of vinyl and stitched, very nice) but they do the same job and look ok. I have bee told all T series had the stitched pieces, maybe someone can verify that. The over riders look bad without something. B's also have a similar "spacer", only in vinyl Regards Ian |

Available from Moss. They are called packing strips and come in a set of 8. Moss P/N 400-418 and are the same for T series, MGAs, MGBs and I suspect midgets. Cheers - Dave |

Hi all, The packing pieces are not shown in the Service Parts List for the TF, but most of us use them now, because of the mismatch in profile between today's aftermarket bumpers and overriders. Cheers, John |

John- It sounds like the tow bar worked for your TD. I'm glad it finally got to you with all the pieces. Cheers, Roy |

Sorry but that house concert series I starting REALLY takes up most of my time. Last first: Roy, Yes it worked and worked well. I had to buy a more powerful car to tow it with but the old one had 360K miles on it anyway. I then used it to tow a Honda Civic from Old Lyme, CT to upstate NY and the bolt holes fit the civic box beam holes fine, too. Thanks Dave D and Ian. I'll probably pick up everything from Atlanta Import next week when I go down on a pleasure trip. Thanks for your kind offer, too, Bruce. I say that we are a great bunch of humans. John |

I'm pretty confident that nothing was originally placed between the edge of the bumper overrider and the bumper bar, no matter what people say. I have studied as many factory images as possible, films and still, and looked at a good number of original cars (including my 35,000-mile TD), and NEVER have I seen any packing or shim strips there - unless the bumpers have been replaced with Moss items. As noted above, they seem intended to fit the mis-match between modern bumpers and overriders, and are probably a Moss invention. Tom |

I would agree but metal to metal starts to rust far faster than metal to dirt to plastic when the area under the plastic can additionally be coated with wax. John |
