MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas LB 140 Headlights??
Hi ALL, I have a TD associate here in Perth who is trying to identify the particular cars his Lucas LB 140 headlamps would fit? They look prewar period. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Rob, from the Lucas number you gave these headlights should be chromed over brass 8" headlights. They were used on a large number of prewar and postwar British cars in particular, MG. The 140 series headlights came in a number of configurations so to help ID them more details are required: 1. flat "U" lens or cateye? 2. rim secured by a screw fastenere or by an anchor shaped spring loaded catch? 3. are one or both reflectors tilting by use of a solenoid? 4. how is the mounting bracket with threaded stud attached to the body of the light? 4. what is the inside diameter of the rim? 5. "King of the Road" medallion at top? 6. do they mount vertically or are they side mount to a fender (wing)? A picture would be good. Cheers, Hugh Pite |

Good day Rob: Spent a month in Perth back in 2004. Met Harry and Deidre Pyle, Mike Sherrell and numerous others. As a west coaster in Canada, I felt quite at home. Beautiful City and enjoyed Kings Park. OK, I'm far from any expert, M.G. or otherwise so here's me thrupnee bit on't lamps ! I reckon the LB 140 is a pre WWII unit at least before 1939. My book shows the 140 series, starting in 1939, as only listing Models: MD 140 and MBD 140. M = Standard Lamp, separate lamp reflector, held with a rubber bead D = Domed Lens 140 = 7.5 inch aperture, 6 inch depth (excluding lens) B = Brass (Chromium Plated) Body (L = used on models normally fitted with separate reflector and lens to denote light unit.) Whatever that last bit refers to, it reads as if the LB lamp is non-seperable and has a semi sealed reflector ? However as I wrote I am no "Guru" Cheers from New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Respectfully: Jack Emdall, TC6768/TD3191. |

Hi Hugh and Jack, Thankyou both your info on the Lucas Headlamp query. I don't have the lamp with me however it is a vertical mounted lamp.It has a flat U shaped lense but I can't recall if the rim is affixed with a setscrew or spring loaded clip. The lamp is chrome on brass. Perhaps used on a prewar Rover? Cheers and thanks. Rob Grantham |
