MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas SFT 576 / SLR 576 ?
Always wondered about this...... "Lucas SFT 576 and the other a SLR 576"....... Is it correct that "SFT" was "fog" & "SLR" was "driving"? S=? F=fog? T=? S=? L=long? R=range? Am I close here? Anybody out there that can fill in the blanks? I had added this to the "re-chrome" thread...but should have started a new one instead. Thanks, David |

Even more questions: I have four of these lamps (with clear lens)...(3 SFT /1 SLR) All four lens are marked "M5 Made in England" across the bottom but each has a different letter near the top left side "G N W R" Only the R says "LUCAS" on the lens...(this one is in the "SLR" lamp. I have two of these listed on ebay and am getting a lot of questions about them. Anybody know of a website that explains all of this? I don't want to misslead anybody...but I bought these from others and seems to me there is a good chance that over the last 50 years lens could have been "swapped" or replaced. Lord knows I have purchased enough items that were not "right" over the years from ebay! (I have a beautiful valve cover purchased for "MGTD mgtf" that would look great if I were to grind the tops off my valve adjustments, take a tourch to the engine block to shorten it and move the mounting studs!...or I guess I could buy a "B" and/or an "A" and put on one of those 'cause it sure doesn't fit on a TF1500!) Cheers, David 55 TF1500 |
Me again! |
There are usually a dozen or so SLR and SFT lamps at every autojumble I go to. Many are complete and some have good chrome. What I never see though are ones with a decent thread on the mounting bolt. The same applies to headlamps - why are the bolts and nuts made from steel and not good old non corroding brass. I have turned a set up from stainless steel for my headlamps but didn't have a fine thread tap / die (couldn't be bothered setting the gears on my lathe) and hope that a fine metric will be OK. Anyone got comments on this Jan T |

Took some rummaging through my old mags to find this. SFT 576 S stands for spigot fixing, found on chrome lamps. FT indicates flat topped beam, which I would guess equates to fog lamp. 576 indicates a 5.76in reflector. SLR S equals spigot fixing again. LR indicates long range. CFT or CLR indicates it was designed for a commercial vehicle, and originally had a black body. |

All this talk about spotlights make me ask this question. Does anybody have an extra clip and screw to hold the lens and reflector in place for the SFT-576. Sandy Sanders Hudson Florida |

Sandy, see pages 110 and 111 in the Moss catalog, items 88 and 89 for the clip and screw. They advertise these as "quality reproductions". I have two original bodies and have been looking at the "light units". The chrome bases on the stems of my units are cracked so I am trying to decide what to do about them also. Dennis |

Henry, Thanks much ...hey I got "1" right! My confidence is high now that at least 1 brain cell lived through the "60's" as well as the "great paint strip of 2001" ! ;-)! Cheers, David |

I have a "Lucas Ranger" (nice script letters in the glass lens cover) and it's clearly numbered 5LR. Arabic numeral '5', not the letter 'S'. There is also a marking 'M5' on the lens. It has a nice upright bulb with a nice cover/reflector arrangement. Apparently, it may not be period appropriate, but it is quite attractive on the car. I'll definitely reinstall it when I get the car back together. (This fall, I hope.) The car only had one of these on the light bar when I dissassembled it, so I'm looking for another, and possibly I will get a shorter range model and use the two position switch to turn on one or both of them. The light did have a stone guard, but the mounting system for the stone guard was crap, so I don't think I'm going to replace it. Anyway, I bid on David's lights, but apparently the reserve is too rich for my blood, especially since I only need one light. Good luck with them. |

According to my mag again! The 5 denotes model number 5, being the Ranger and Fog Ranger models, ie 5FT and 5LR. A W somewhere in there, say 5WLR, denotes that it has rear fixing to attach to a wing. |

Thanks, Henry. That's good to know. |
