MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas SFT462 Reproduction Fog Light
I purchased a Lucas SFT462 fog light on ebay for my early TD, I know they were on TC's but I have read they were also on early TD's, plus if you checked out the original pics from Chris Coopers site in a previous thread there is a TD with a SFT462 foglight. Considering I got it at a great deal and there was only 1 other bid besides mine I started thinking it was too good of a deal to be true, so I started doing a little research. It was described as being restored with new/restored/rechromed parts, so I looked at the sellers history and a couple months ago he had sold another one exactly like it. I googled and found another one that had been sold here in the states for quite a bit more a couple weeks ago and it looked identical right down to the yellow cloth wire with a red strip and it was described as restored. Moss lists them in their catalog as N/A but you can buy many of the parts, even the Lucas prince of darkness medallion/button. I think Moss's source, maybe even Lucas is reproducing them and they are trickling out into the market. I am happy with the one I got and still think it was a good deal even if it turns out to be a repop but if I had paid close to 500 bucks and it was a repop...Ouch! "Caveat Emptor" |

I bought an original Lucas parts catalog on ebay that was printed in 1953. I too had heard that early TDs used the SFT462 fog lamp and the later ones used a SFT576 lamp. However, the 1953 Lucas catalog I have only shows one foglamp specified for the TD and it's the SFT462. I've also heard that the 576 lamps came about during TF production. Maybe someone has a later dated catalog that would indicate when they became available.

I received the fog lamp in the mail today and I think it may be an original and not a repo. The lens has Lucas 462 made in England. The body has the prince of darkness medallion but there are no other Lucas markings on the body. I have seen pictures of some lamps that had the SFT462 very faintly on the body and it looks like this one has been rechromed so it could have been covered up. The glass and reflector silvering look aged but in very good condition, regardless it is a great looking fog lamp and I think a pretty good deal. Here are some pics, the chrome looks much better in person. |
