MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas Sports Coil
I would like to know if anyone has a Lucas coil catalog who could help me identify the charactersitics of a coil I have. The tag says it is a Lucas Sports Coil with one of the two following Model numbers. HS 2 2V ER or HS 2 12V ER The Type is: L - O or maybe L - U +50-8D The stamped letters and numbers are very light and not easy to read. Anyone know the Ohm readings it should have? |

Jim! A standard 12 volt coil has a primary winding of about 3.5 ohms. The later model Lucas Coils (DLB 102) used on the reduced voltage circuits (MGB 75->79) are 1.5 ohms. I believe you'll find 2.5 -> 3.0 ohms. I am no fan of the "sports" coils as the extra spark is not necessary and the reduced resistance uses more amperage causing the points to fail sooner, and, once in a blue moon, causes the condenser to short. John, I'm a little shocked to see you say "no fan of the "sports" coils" as you replaced the "reproduction" coil that was on my TF when it was at your shop with a sports coil. (I ended up painting it black so it would look like "correct" coil). Since then I am running a pertronix Ignitor w/ Lucas "Bumble-Bee" wire, Boshe Platinum Plugs and wondering what your feelings are on this combination. Prior to this I was pulling the plugs about every 500 miles and cleaning in a plug blaster. Pulled the plugs the other day with about 3k miles on them and look much better. I still run a little on the "rich" side (don't want to risk burnning a valve). Would value your feelings on all this! Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

I bought an NOS black "Q-type" coil at the Stoneleigh exhibition at the NEC while in the UK a few years ago. The seller insisted that this was the correct coil for a TD. It works great and looks fine. How does it compare to the Lucas and Lucas sports coil? Ira |
