MG TD TF 1500 - master cylinder rebuild

I have replaced/cleaned all brake lines, wheel cylinders and rebuilt the master cylinder and now am having trouble getting all the air out of the system. I used a syringe to inject brake fluid into the wheel cylinders but have not filled the wheel clyinders prior to installing them. I have tried everything found in the archives except this. I now wonder if the cupped washer used during the master cylinder rebuild (listed in the workshop manual) might be installed backwards. What is the effect if it is installed backwards. I used the original washer b/c the washer received in the rebuild kit was not cupped. Thanks in advance for your help. I have also let the car sit for a few days and readjusted the brakes - still no luck.

Tim,

There was a pretty good thread started by Rob Edwards down the page 'TD Master Cylinder kit' where he referenced the Moss document talking about the different versions of Master Cylinders:
http://www.mossmotors.com/SiteGraphics/Tech_PDFs/180-730.pdf

So assuming you know which one you have and which kit you need, and that you are dealing with an original... your nomenclature isn't matching the WS manual, so are you speaking of the Valve Washer, Valve Cup, Master Cup or Secondary Cup?

I know from experience that the dished washer (the metal spring washer) can be installed backwards with no ill effects. In fact, I'm not sure it has a backwards as flipping it over and turning it 90 degrees seems to make it look the same.

Do you mean you injected brake fluid into the wheel cylinders after they were installed on the back plates? I'm a little unsure of what you mean there too. I found that pre-filling my wheel cylinders wasn't needed, but many have found the opposite to be true. I should think that injecting them after they are mounted would still work to fill them.

Hi Tim,
I have found that slacking off the adjusters and pumping the brakes gently a few times tends to shift the air from the cylinders into the lines and then can be bled out. I clamp off the ones I not working on so I can feel the results after re-adjusting.

Sorry about the confusion - you are right, it is the dished washer. And I did inject fluid with the cylinders mounted on the back plate. Thanks for your help. BTW I do have the original master cylinder as the moss kit had all the correct parts. You know it is funny, things that I believe will take a few minutes sometimes just goes on and on and things that I belive will be difficult turn out easy. Go figure but I am still having fun.

Great tip Ray, I'm putting that in my notes.

Tim, as long as you're having fun, I'm right there with you.
