MG TD TF 1500 - Master cylinder sleeving.

Can anybody in the UK recommend a firm to sleeve my master cylinder. After having two friends suffer M/C failure with new units I want to keep to original.

Ray. The suppliers list on the TT2 website has a couple of UK based businesses that do it. I hope you're wrong about new master-cylinders though, I just fitted a new TRW cylinder in the hope that I would avoid problems by doing so.

Dave,
the problem has only occurred on new AP/Lockheed cylinders.
As far as we can tell UK suppliers now only stock TRW, one supplier says that AP are not up to their standards but nobody will admit to any failure other than the three we have had. I have ben running T Types for over 40 years and have had cylinders leak or take in air but never a catastrophic failure with no warning!.
There is a thread in archive in May this year "brake master cylinder failure"

Hi
Past Parts www.pastparts.co.uk have sleeved several slave cylinders for me on A.H.Sprites.
On the MGA Section they have had lots of problems with TRW Master cylinders either leaking straight out of the box or giving residual pressure. The problem is also found on Sprites and midgets that also use a tandem master cylinder. In the case AP Caparo were favoured which seems the reverse of your situation.
I did raise the problem with TRW at a trade show even showing them the thread containing the complaints but Classic Car Components only total 8% of their trade.

If you decide to re-sleeve your master cylinder make sure the sleeve is stainless steel.

John, why do you say only use Stainless? I've used brass on my cars for many years and never had an issue. Indeed, I did that with my Sunbeam Alpine's brakes and clutch components over 25 years ago and I've not had to service them since! (apart from changing out the fluid every couple of years, of course)
Kevin McLemore

Kevin, It is less expensive here to use stainless than brass hence the choice and lasts for ever.I would think the sleeve used is much thinner than a brass sleeve and I doubt if the body of the master cylinder would need machining.Turn around here is just a couple of days.
