Very strange. It's on the spark plug side of the engine and looks like they attach to the two outside studs which hold the tappet cover on, but for what reason? who knows?

Bracketing for TC style air cleaner.

Paul is right. The strange brackets held a cannister type air filter. An early Moss catalogue will show you both the cannister and the brackets.

So we have two things answered. What the brackets are for and what the bolts on the side of the air cleaner originally were used for.
BEC Cunha

Nope, not TC. The straps on the TC go to the top of the valve cover.

I could barely make out the picture. It is very dark. However, my old 1952 MG-YB had an air filter that mounted across the valve cover. The only photo I have of the engine is from the carb side, so it doesn't show the left side support bracket. I'd be happy to forward the picture to anyone who provides an e-mail off thread.

Could be TC. "enclosed" are pictures of my Y. I think the TC airfilter is longer and that would explain the kink in the brackets.

Duh... I've got the kinks as well! So you can count on it being a Y valvecover!

If you want to get rid of it cheaply, please mail me off-line; I still have to make a valvecover-racer for the Luxemburg-meeting in August.

Gene-

Note the caveat, 'TC style'. More likely Y. My YAs went a while back and they had them fitted. My YB has a TF 1500cc fitted, with a single 1 1/2" on the Y manifold, but with a pancake. Over the years I have had too many TDs and often you would get them with bolt, without, etc.

I'll stick to the TC as the "proprietor"of this valve cover and brackets. I believe this is from a very early TC and was probably kept over from the design of the TB.

My Moss catalogue from 2001 issue MGT-30, top of page 37 clearly shows these. Quite possibly it was also used on early Y's.

I'll bet Neil Cairns could resolve this.

Gordon,

I'll go along with Paul's "TC style" air filter but not with it being a TC valve cover. It's definitely not an early TC (or late TB) cover since those covers were the aluminum allow covers so often copied and used on the XPAG engines. The TC air filter brackets are shorter and mount on top under the valve cover hold-down nuts - you can see it in http://www.mg-tabc.org/s_cook.htm and http://mg-tabc.org/a_bradley.htm. Also, the recirc on the top of the valve cover is on the intake/exhaust side, not on the spark plug side as this one is.

Regards,
Gene

Gene Gillam

Belay my last sentence - this recirc is on the intake/exhaust side also...sorry...but still not TC related.

I think the pictures of my Y show it as identical; I'll bet a good bottle of whiskey that it is a Y-cover. Any takers?
