MG TD TF 1500 - MG surviging a Motorkhana (autocross) ??!

Have a vague idea of participants doing a lot of fancy bootwork in a tarmac Motorkhana... how would an MG's drivetrain survive?!?

Or is there no Abingdon remaining under that blue silouette anymore?

We held a lot of parking lot rallies in the late 50s and early 60s, and the MGTDs with the original 5.125 rear end ratios did well as the courses required a lot of low end torque and quickness in the lower gears, as well as good turning ability. The early TFs with the 1250 cc and the 4.875 did not do as well. Later TFs with more power did better, but I seem to remember the TDs most.I had a TR3A at the time which also did very well. In general the lighter cars with good torque did well. The Healeys and Jags could get up a little more speed on the longer legs, but were out turned and out spirited on the the shorter legs and esses.
The possible problem with the TDs drive train would be the same as always - twisting an axle shaft, which generally comes a from sudden change from reverse, or allowing the car to coast back wards and then popping the clutch.

Hi Will, if you ever go to a natmeet you will see it in action. T types still participate in the motorkhana. Personally I don't as if something goes wrong it's a long way home.

Natmeet this year is in Launceston, Tasmania.

Cheers,

Paul.

Looks like fun... would never be able to get that drum in a TD however?

Guys,

I have just got home from the MGCC Victoria Mortorkhana at Somerton this afternoon. There were 3 TD's, a TF, a TC and my YA special all entered and running serious times.(and all between 50 and 60 years of age)

Our cars were originally designed with this sort of motorsport in mind and as long as they are properly maintained can still perfom as they were originally intended. Go out and have some great fun with your car at a motorkhana/autocross/sprint/hillclimb and even if your are unlucky to break something. at least they are easy to fix!

hehe, have spectated my fair share of various autokhanas ... dad's gone thru his series of A, B, midget, TCs and other non-marques. Most of these have been on grass or dirt, they've blown their share of parts too.

Guess these days running a TD/TF anywhere near seriously would require a rebuilt gearbox and uprated halfshafts?

Cost-wise... might be "cheaper" to build one of those Mini-based choppers! :-)

nope, due to the spaces in the filename, the only way to make the link work is to cut out the text between the quote commas...
