MG TD TF 1500 - M.G. T Type Owners & Restorers Club

The following letter was recently sent to the Secretaries of the various M.G. Car Clubs in Australia,

I’m presently compiling the register for M.G. TTORC (T Type Owners & Restorers Club) which is a new national T Type club to further the interests of those wishing to restore and/or maintain their T & Y Types and pre-war M.G.’s. I write requesting that you pass on this email to the various registrars and encourage them and their members to get in touch.

We are part of the CAMS Social & Enthusiasts Plan 2 for clubs with a membership of 40 to 100. About 60 or so owners have indicated interest from all over the country, thanks to the support of the various State ATA reps and to date some 55 have signed up with numbers increasing daily.

Registration and acceptance with CAMS has been approved as well as the registration with the NSW Department of fair Trading. It should be understood that this is clearly NOT an attempt to discourage membership of the various M.G. Clubs, but simply to provide a national focus for owners of T, Y and pre-war cars and to encourage interaction between them, whilst still retaining membership of the existing clubs, who address the needs of all models.

A copy of the constitution can be provided for anyone interested in joining.

So if you own a pre-1955 model up to and including the TF 1500 give yourself a Xmas present and get in touch!

Benefits are;

• Connecting with the national T Type fraternity, including the very active groups in Victoria, Canberra, Perth and South Australia,
• Encouraging more T Type technical and garage days in the other States,
• No requirement to attend any events throughout the year,
• Membership of existing clubs is not an issue,
• Contributing to the annual TTORC Run Sheet,
• Advance knowledge of events organised by TTORC members in every State for those intending to travel,
• Technical contributions from TTORC members across the country,
• All insurances prepaid through affiliation with CAMS as a social/technical club,
• The protection afforded by being part of a Not for Profit Incorporated Association,
• Hands on demonstrations of engine and gearbox restoration wherever they might be happening,
• Active involvement in the preparation, painting and repair of panels,
• Advance knowledge of serious issues associated with certain parts from major suppliers,
• The loaning of specialist tools and equipment,
• Knowledge of garage days and clean out sales,
• Restoration updates,
• Advertising of the auctions, sale & the exchanging of parts,
• Access to original upholstery items for use as templates,
• The benefits of new technology such as Cunifer brake lines,
• The opportunity to assist in the restoration of cars being rebuilt,
• Reports on the various Tech Days organised by TTORC members,
• The sourcing of hard to find material such as that resembling the original oilcloth used in all of the T Types,
• Learning how to repair original items such as water pumps using washing machine seals and many of the original items lurking in your boxes of bits that were normally thrown away,
• And access to bi-monthly articles on technical aspects of T Types written by Rob Grantham and also my articles on aspects of TD restoration not covered in any of the books,
• As well as identifying the errors in these two major restoration books.

And so much more. The benefits of sharing this knowledge are self-evident, as is meeting with and connecting with others who have T Types under restoration or on the road and who share the passion for the marque.

Access to the forums on the internet such as this one isn’t available to many T Type owners because of limited knowledge with computers, however most know how to send and receive emails, or who have family members who can, so TTORC will communicate with members via email, with relevant technical information attached.

Membership is $13 AU per year and the joining fee is also $13 AU. This covers affiliation with CAMS, all insurances, the registration of TTORC as an Incorporated Association and the preparation of the DOFT annual report.

If you’d like to join all you need is a T or Y Type or a pre-war M.G., even if it’s just a chassis and a box of bits. I’ll need your residential address as well as your model type and chassis number, contact number and confirmation of your email address. Reply to (pjbm at bigpond dot com). A copy of the constitution will be emailed on request along with our Certificate of Incorporation. Payment can be arranged by direct deposit once the bank account has been set up. Details will be advised. At this stage all that is required are your details. If you'd like to be one of the 100, just email me.

I extend a warm welcome to all eligible owners especially to those who live in Australia and have supported the Lane Cove River National Park T Type Tech Day in Sydney over the past 7 years. I expect that this event will now become even bigger and better!

Still room for about another 40 members. The advantages of joining are many, even for OS owners. The events are sanctioned by CAMS so M.G. TTORC membership permits longer journeys to out of the way places to participate in workshops, garage days etc. The access to the technical articles alone, that will be published every couple of months, will be well worth the annual $13 AU membership fee. Be great to have a few more of the regular contributors to this forum join. The information exchange flows both ways, with contributions from OS members welcomed and the reports and feedback from events just held will be invaluable. Cheers

Current membership is now 68 and counting. Because of the CAMS insurance arrangement, membership is capped at 100. Still only one member from SA, which is odd as all the other States are well represented. Apparently there is an active T Type sub group there. Be great to have some SA members as it would then make TTORC a truly national club.

Just received the following from one of TTORC's American members. This may be of assistance to others in the States in avoiding the extortionate charges that banks impose when sending money overseas. Membership is now 72 and counting...

"I just checked the WU website. It may be a possibility. They apparently charge $5.44 US to send money to a bank account in OZ with a credit card, $2.98 for a debit card, and zero to send from a US bank account. Don't know anything about a foreign check (you guys spell funny - there's no "Q" in the word). I'll have to look into it."

Who would have thought that transferring money from the States could be such a pain. Here's what one of the guys wrote;

"Hi Peter,
I'm still having trouble transferring money from my bank to the club's bank. I've spent at least two hours trying to do so.

I didn't reply to your email message to club members about international funds transfer, because you and I started the conversation as a two-person email. However, you can share our conversation with others if you want.

I still believe that PayPal is the best way for international members (or at least U.S. members to pay dues to the club. I prefer to use PayPal or send a personal check.

Here's why:

> PAYPAL
PayPal is used commonly in the U.S. and many people worldwide. The process takes only a minute or two. The recipient receives payment within a few minutes. The fee for using the service is small and can be added to the member's dues as a "service fee" so that the club receives the full $26AUS dues. The club decides if it needs to establish a PayPal account for the club, or if an officer will receive payments to his personal PayPal account and then transfer funds to the club's bank account.

> FOREIGN CHECK
A foreign cheque requires a trip to my bank and a trip to the post office for special mailing if sent by post. Some banks may charge a fee. Postage is low ... about $1.15USD. The club receives payment in 42 days.

I mailed a personal check to Rob Grantham a few years ago. It was a hassle for both of us. Currency conversion, delays with the check clearing, postage.

> WESTERN UNION
Western Union is not a widely used by people as PayPal. It requires users to set up an account. It is commonly used by on-line scammers as a way to send cash. I prefer to not use it.

> TRANSFER FUNDS USING MY BANK IN THE U.S.
I contacted my bank about the international transfer from my bank account to your bank account in Australia. The cost to transfer $26AUS Dollars (~$20USD) can be as much as $45USD, although if is free for my type of account with the bank.

The BSB code 611001 was not recognized. Going farther, I entered the name of the bank, Sydney Mutual Bank. It was not recognized either. If the BSB code and the bank had been recognized, I would have still needed to know the full address of the bank.

> TRANSFER FUNDS USING YOUR BANK IN AUSTRALIA
I contacted the Sydney Mutual Bank. Beth Clark Branch Supervisor, Australian Mutual Bank sent this link to me:
https://www.sydneymutual.bank/EverydayBanking/DomesticInternationalAccess/SendReceiveMoney/TelegraphicTransfer

The link told me to send the Telegraphic Transfer (TT) via an American Express service that connects to my bank. The fee to use the service was not disclosed. The money does not go to the Sydney Mutual Bank. I guess AmX transfers it to your bank. I'm sure that it's safe, but too many players and banks involved for me to be comfortable using it.

Thanks for listening.Have a great day."

I don't do internet banking, being an un-trusting soul, so once I get all of the PayPal payments from the States I've then got to figure out how to get the money into the TTORC account under the appropriate member's name without driving me or the Treasurer crazy... Cheers?

I went through a similar exercise in 2018 when needing to $30 to a bank account in Oz to attend a military reunion.

After trying 15 ways to skin a cat I asked my daughter to do and gave her US$25 next time I saw her. Of course, she lives in Oz.

Peter
P G Gilvarry

There is one additional way to get money to Peter, which has not been mentioned.
I did suggest it to Peter.

If an officer has an iPhone, and has activated the Wallet app, I can use Apple pay, with my Apple card.
This does a direct transfer at no additional cost.

Guys please hold off sending subs until I'm well enough to sort this out. I'm not supposed to be out of bed for at least another week, maybe two. Cheers

Peter,

What sort of surgery did you have, one of the members at out club had a alaminectomy on 3 vertebrae 8 days ago, he was drinking beer with us tonight and walking without his cane.
P G Gilvarry

They removed a section of my spine about 3" long and about 1/2" wide. I can walk for short periods but I've been instructed NOT to sit and to remain in bed for 3 weeks following the surgery. I can also walk and drink beer but I'm supposed to keep off the grog, as it and 600 mg of Lyrica apparently don't go well together! Cheers
Peter TD 5801
P Hehir

Peter. A speedy recovery for you my friend. Do exactly as the surgeon has instructed you to do. Nothing more or less. So that you can obtain the best possible outcome. You don’t have to ask me... you already know.

Possibly the simplest solution would be to PayPal via “friends and family” to a dedicated email for the club tied to the clubs bank account for a direct deposit(?). I don’t believe there would be any fees to either party unless a CC was used in the transaction which I believe is added to the buyers side of the transaction. The currency exchange rate would be accurate for the date of transfer. If club dues were sent via this route, the treasurer then would be able to show the payment in the clubs ledger As the transaction would be confirmed through the clubs email.

I could also simply send a check via snail mail but it would be a crapshoot as to whether the exchange rate would be accurate when it arrived. Whatever is decided, I’ll be happy to send a payment once a decision has been made and the logistics are worked out.

To all those in Oz. Our prayers are with you and your countrymen during this devastating fire season. Stay safe

Cheers Mate

Sounds right to me Bill
As I understand it---------
With Paypal-which I use quite a bit there is no fee until the money is withdrawn directly from the receiver's Paypal account
To send money to an email address ,that email address has to have a Paypal account connected to it
Simply sending to an email address won't work
I believe that if Peter sets up an email address with a connected Paypal account there would be no fee from Paypal to release that money into a bank account( MG TTORC bank account) BUT some banks charge an electronic transfer fee for the service

I guess it depends on the bank
Sydney Mutual should be able to set it up, it'll just depend on them if they want to stick a fee on it

Numbers have now climbed to 86! I'm amazed at just how fast this concept has taken off. From some of the emails I've received from M.G. Car Club members, it confirms my own experience that most M.G. Car Clubs have little or no interest in furthering the restoration of T Types. Even clubs whose mission statement it is to restore these cars, have just become social groups who happen to own M.G.'s and who like to take trips. The focus isn't on restoration or maintenance, which I guess is why M.G. TTORC has really taken off. I'm currently working towards completing the logo which will then enable us to have a website.

For the 8 American members, there is no rush to pay the subs. In a few weeks when I'm more mobile we'll arrange a PayPal payment. I'll be contacting each of you offline with the details.

The February digital Newsletter is being assembled at present and hopefully it will sent to all 100 members then, as there is just 14 more to go. Many thanks to those here on the BBS who got right behind this effort. Cheers

Chris, given that three of the members of MG TTROC are within a 30 mi radius of each other ( Bruce , you and I) maybe we should have a Sub/sub group LOL.

Bill there are only two in California, just you and Chris, so it'd be a small group, just a pair. We now have 91 members and steadily rising, so last chance for those interested Aussies to climb on board, as we close the books at 100. Oddly we have just two members from South Australia, the T registrar and another who isn't part of the M.G. Car Club there. Great representation from the other States though. Bill I'll contact you offline about doing a small illustrated piece on the new paint job. Cheers

Just spoken to a Western Union rep here in Oz who tells me that North American members can pay their subs painlessly in just a couple of minutes over the phone simply by dialing 187 989 3268. The cost is $2.69.

However there IS an issue at our end. For some reason the recently formed Sydney Mutual Bank is yet to appear on the international financial horizon. I've contacted them this morning after yet another failed attempt to have money transferred from the States. Once this glitch is addressed I'll contact the 9 guys in the States and confirm that the way is now clear. So hold off for the present. We now have 93 members and I hope that the remaining 7 vacancies can be filled here, especially as there are only two members from South Australia and none from the Northern Territory. The rest of the country is well represented. The logo design is a cracker! Cheers

We have a logo! For those in North America, hold off on the subs. Our bank is still trying to sort out the reason for their "invisibility". Cheers

This is the latest from the bank. It doesn't sound too promising...

"Hi Peter,

Thanks for the below.

As to Sydney Mutual Bank sorting the problems at our end – unfortunately there is not much else we can do. Our new BSB is registered so it really is up to other financial institutes to update their BSB listing. It would similar to how we update software etc. on our personal devices?

The Western Union fee seems reasonable to for the amount given it is an overseas transaction.

All I can suggest is that they try the old BSB or speak with their financial institute to update their BSB listing so they can use the new BSB?

Hope that this helps."

It seems that Sydney Mutual Bank is clearly saying that the fault doesn't lie with them. They believe that if OS depositors use the following;

• BSB 611001 Sydney Mutual Bank
• Client Number - 163260
• Account Name - M.G. T TYPE OWNERS & RESTORERS CLUB INCORPORATED
• Phone (02) 9678 2150

Then it should be plain sailing, if not the fault lies with the OS bank. I'm not convinced. Apologies if you guys end up getting nowhere again. My PayPal account isn't an option though. Good luck. Cheers

Hi, Has anyone from the United States figured out how to send money for the membership? I just tried doing it through Western Union online, but that didn't work, so maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Aidan
A Corwin

For the 9 OS members of M.G. TTORC my advice again is it's best to call your bank and ensure that they’ve updated their BSB list to include Sydney Mutual bank. Apparently many banks for whatever reason haven't bothered to do this. Don't hang up until you have confirmation that they have actually done so. Trying to transact on line is NOT recommend as the same issues will present themselves and you will again be frustrated. Once you are certain that your bank has updated their records then AND ONLY THEN CALL your local Western Union office and have them effect the transfer. It should only cost you $2.69 and just a couple of minutes of your time. All from the comfort of your own home. It shouldn't be necessary to actually visit your bank. The other issue that guys here have experienced is that the space permitted to enter in the name of the account is too short. M.G. T Type Owners & Restorers Club Incorporated wont fit. Just use the name until you run out of space. The bank here has accepted the abbreviation M.G. TTORC in some cases, however I've been asked to advise members not to use it. If you attempt to transact on line you'll almost certainly fail. Don't have your bank handle the transaction as you'll end up being ripped off right royally!

Use the phone. Call your bank. Call Western Union. Pay the subs and joining fee in $AU. Pay Western Union $2.69. Cheers

I see that my credentials have been called into question. This is the appropriate thread on which to respond. The only other car I’ve partially restored was a Mk 1 Jaguar. This involved a respray and re-varnishing the woodwork and replacing the brakes. The engine was rebuilt by a Jag specialist. Apart from the woodwork, the interior was in fair condition, as was the chrome. This was in 1976/77. I’ve worked on Minis and Morris Oxfords. Presently I'm 90% of the way through the only T Type I ever plan to restore. And that's the TD that I purchased when I was 19 in 1969. It used to belong to Robert Gibson and was stored in late 1971 and only saw the light of day about 8 years ago. The information I've gathered has come from thousands of hours of research backed up by personal hands on experience. I'm fortunate to have known people like Bob Lawrence, Ron Taylor and Robert Gibson, all three of whom I respect and are held in high regard here. In the past they have willingly passed on a great deal of knowledge and have probably forgotten more about T Types than I'll ever know.

I have never claimed to be any sort of authority, except on those original components that I've researched and successfully restored. They include TD/TF water pumps, pin clocks, odometers, trip meters, speedos, tool kits and bituminised hessian rolls, TD glove box fabrication and flocking, dashboard construction, kick plate manufacture, ignition switch restoration, the piping core; I’ve fabricated copies of original 2 bow TD front side curtain frames, made extensive but invisible modifications to the door lock, striker and hinges to eliminate the problematic wood screws and I’ve compiled information from many other aspects of the original presentation of these cars from a great many sources, including Chris Couper, Peter Fogarty and Hugh Pite, and apart from those mentioned above, there have been dozens of others. I’ve also compiled an ever growing list of Moss TD/TF parts that are unsuitable (currently 75 items and growing), rewritten the 1st section of the gearbox in the WSM so that even someone with no experience could follow it. This was based on stripping and reassembling the box twice on two consecutive days, noting the many important omissions in the process described in the WSM. I’ve willingly sent these articles to those who’ve requested them asking only that they respect my copyright.

All of the work on my TD I've done myself (except for the help of an experienced person when I tackled the gearbox and the conversion to the 4.3, which I readily admit was beyond me). This includes panel beating, MIG welding where necessary, strengthening the B pillar connection to the steel cross brace at the rear of the seat, replacing timbers where needed, manufacturing the side curtain door, lid and door stops, the front and rear floors, all of the interior upholstery panels including the door cards, prepping and spray painting the whole car, panel by panel. I do have some professional qualifications as I'm an instrument fitter by trade and I’m also a licensed carpenter joiner. I have organisational skills developed over twenty years as a construction manager for some of the top tier one & two companies here in Sydney, as well as some ability as a writer, having penned a number of screen plays and written dozens of articles for magazines distributed here in Sydney such as City Hub and Alt Media. I’ve conducted annual T Type Tech Days here in Sydney at the Lane Cove River National Park for the past 7 years for the M.G. Restorers Association, to which anyone who has an interest in T Types was invited. Over that time 59 owners have attended at least one. Most of these people have joined the M.G. T Type Owners & Restorers Club.

We’re also very fortunate in that I’ve found that quite a few of the 98 members of M.G. TTORC are vastly experienced, much more so than I, some of whom have restored dozens of T Types. Anyone with a passion for T Types is most welcome to join, providing they agree to abide by the mission statement described in the membership section of our constitution. People as young as thirteen can join as full members. Our most recent member is 91 and has restored dozens of T Types and is currently restoring a TF. He does all the work himself. I'm not in the same class as the professional restorers, nor would I ever claim to be. Anything I write is from the perspective of one man's journey. I suspect much like Horst Schach. Articles that are contributed are protected by the author’s copyright, as it should be. The bi-monthly digital mag will only be distributed to members and the mag itself is also copyrighted. This is something that is not negotiable. That means it won’t change. Period. Cheers
Peter TD 5801

Hi Peter, I totally agree with John. Any information on restoration is good. My problem has been with Western Union...I went to an agent( I was willing to pay the extra money) and they still wont allow me to send money to that account from the USA, it came up with an error code, apparently preventing money from going into a business account. I'm not sure what to do, but if anyone from the USA has paid, please let us know how you did it. Thanks very much Aidan

I assume everybody here knows there are many such groups on Facebook. I am a member of several including MG TC TD AND TF Owners which currently shows 2,581 members sharing pictures, videos, and all manner of advice instantly over the internet for FREE!

efh Haskell

I belong to that group, may have been started by an Aussie with a handful of T Series, including a TC that he drove away from his wedding using wedding cars tunbridge wells 45 years ago.

Sometimes on the group the contributors have not read all the previous posts and are either repeating other information.

This forum and www.mgexp.com are both free, and invaluable for the free sharing of information by the members. Plus these 2 forums are searchable going back 25 years.

All forums are useful, you just have to know how to ask the question and thank the folk that provide input.

My 2c worth.

Many people including myself aren't members of Facebook for a whole host of reasons. This includes a fair percentage of TTORC members. And quite a few more aren't at all internet savvy. As far as the free bit goes members here think $13 p/a is a gift. It just covers insurance costs and DOFT affiliation. If you don't want to join, then don't... No one is twisting your arm. We already have 100 enthusiastic members. The very last thing we need are naysayers. Finally, if you don't have anything positive to say then we'd all much prefer you didn't say anything at all! Cheers

There are several folk who are members of Facebook, for many and varied reasons. Many people are internet savvy and belong to the two best forums for our beloved cars.

The spirit of these forums is what is important, their search ability is what makes them useful. When I need to do a job I search both forums extensively, if I have questions I can reach out and get information. Sometimes you have to sort the wheat from the chaff.

As a member of NEMGTR and a local club with a member who has instructed a Brtitish Auto Class at one of our nearby vocational schools for the last 27 years I don’t think that TTORC has a lot to offer.

If I lived in Australia it might be different, here I have access to several sources of useful information just a very brief “ping” away. Email to some of the contributors to Kimber Fest seminars are usually answered in 12 hours.

I am sure it will succeed, wishing you all the best, just hope it is not a solution looking for a problem.

With few exceptions the members here thank folk who take the time to contribute, ensuring that the answers continue coming. Those few exceptions don’t seem to have the ability to search, whether that is due to lack of ability or just ignorance is unknown.

I personally print a lot of information to OneNote so it is saved to the cloud and is searchable. An example was a recent post from Tom Lange about which taps/dies to have rather than buying two complete sets is saved for the day I decide to make that investment for my workshop.

These forums are my first read most days, if I can I offer assistance I do. One of the issues with the Facebook groups is the difficulty of a search, this forum has an archive going back into the 90s.

Enjoy, only 10 weeks to driving season.

The 1st issue of M.G. TTORC's digital Newsletter is about to be issued. There's a note included for those in Nth America to hold off on attempting to pay the subs. I'm arranging a meeting with a WU rep here in Sydney to try to resolve this. If a satisfactory outcome can't be reached we'll look at another means to transfer the dues. There's no urgency so please sit tight until this is resolved. My goal is to ensure that you guys aren't financially disadvantaged, regardless of how long this takes.

We've also had advice from CAMS, now Motorsport Australia, that we are able to increase our membership to 200. We have now just exceeded the 100 members that we were permitted. There will be no increase in the subs/dues. So if you were thinking of joining, please do so as the restriction has now been lifted. If you have joined and you reside in OZ, please note that subs are now due. The 1st issue includes a great background piece by one of our Nth American members, who will be well known to many of the BBS regulars, an article by Rob Grantham on preparing metalwork for chrome plating and a piece from me on restoring the T Type pin clocks, without resorting to the expensive digital conversion. Cheers

A simple fix would be to Paypal to an individual and have that individual put the funds into the Club's bank account.

If you use the "family & friends" option the recipient receives the full amount.

So for example Paypal to Peter, Peter deposits a check into the Club's account.

You can Paypal in almost any currency, I have purchased parts/services in UK. Germany and Australia using Paypal, the exchange rate is not a big deal when you are talking $13 Australian pesos.

Just a thought!

P G Gilvarry

Easy fix really--

Get a dedicated email address for M.G.TTORC

You could do this through gmail (for free)and have something simple like-
( mgttorc@gmail.com )--
just a suggestion---

Open a paypal account to this email address
you will need a credit/debit card alocated to the mgttorc bank account-most accounts have these already but you might have to ask if they haven't handed you one

Then the paypal account will then be linked to the mgttorc bank account

Then anyone with paypal can pay by paypal and money from paypal can be transfered free of any charges to the bank account
It would also allow mgttorc to send money to anyone with paypal if needed (can't think why but maybe return of subs or whatever) and the best bit is, if an overseas member was unsure of how much to send paypal will do the conversion or you could send a request, to say someone in the US for the $26Au or whatever US and paypal will automatically convert the request to whatever it is on the day--around $18US and all they have to do is press ok and it's done

Thanks Willy. All of those options have been looked into and for a variety of reasons they won't work. I'll email you offline and explain why. Cheers

It does work, give it a shot, then rule it out if/when it fails.

FFS, try it!

The M.G. T Type Owners & Restorers Club Incorporated is now fully subscribed with 200 members in 6 countries. This membership cap will NEVER be increased due to the steep rise in insurances for clubs with 201 or more members that are affiliated with Motorsport Australia.

As this will be my last post, my sincere thanks to those of you on the BBS who have asked for, received and appreciated my articles and my original contributions, (at no cost) and who've offered me your undertaking that you’d respect my copyright - and who have been more than generous with your encouragement and your enthusiastic support; both on - and far more telling - off this forum, over the past 8 or 9 years. TTORC already has a waiting list, so if your concern is focused on the cars rather than their owners and their organisations; and if you'd like to join this well respected international club (when and if a vacancy occurs) in order to gain access to original, copyright protected, technical articles published in our bi-monthly magazine that you’ll find nowhere else, you may place your name on the waiting list simply by emailing me at pjbm (at) bigpond (dot) com.

We currently have at least one of almost all M.G. models represented, from the M Type to the TF 1500, including specials and those vehicles built in the twenties in the Morris Garage at the Oxford Military College at Cowley, Oxford in the United Kingdom.

All that remains is to wish my BBS friends and supporters a fond farewell.

Over and out...

Cheers
