MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF Ivory paint

Dear MG Friends!

I would like to ask your help regarding the "Ivory" body colour codes under the web page "http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtf/mgtf_finishes.htm".
The given codes are too old so I couldn't find and buy this paint anywhere.

Can you help me with new codes thats are exactly the same colour so compatible please!

Thanks for everybody!

Ideally you need to find a part on the car (or somebody elses) that is in the original ivory colour. Then take that to a paint supplier and ask them to match it. There is no good reason that a good match cannot be obtained.

I did what Dave suggests back in 1971 & found a perfect ivory match in acrylic lacquer. The TC colour Sequoia Cream (YL5) is identical. This may be a help. If you have no luck I may be able to send you a sample. I'm waiting to respray the passenger door IF the humidity here ever drops below 30% again. Cheers

TF's were noticeably paler than previous T types. Being 'exact' could be tricky. Also, some of the chemicals have evolved since back then. I would suggest picking a colour from a modern car chart. The reliance on old codes has resulted in more than one restoration that was wide of the desired mark.

Unlike the red shades that contained Lead and possibly Cadmium, the pigment types used in Ivory (mainly Titanium dioxide and some yellow Iron oxide). are still used today so a good match should still be possible.

There will be at least 3 TF's going to the All British Day at Echunga next Sunday 14th, they are all 'correct' Ivory....and they are all different.

Colour matched to my original Ivory colour on my TD. I would think the TF would be the same. A place to start anyway.

Ford YY-97-6210
Colonial White

This was a direct match to original paint found on my car. It is available as a Ford Truck Colour. The "Wimbelton White" was off colour and too yellow.

Paint mixed at factories in the '50's was not always direct colour matching from lot to lot... so you have a bit of latitude. Once its all the same colour it will look like its always been there no matter what colour you choose.

In the 50s it was all matched by eye to a reference standard. So as you say there could be some variation that a spectrophotometer would pick up today - or somebody with a "good eye", but it would look substantially the same to most people. This is much the way it was until the 70s.

You can use the PaintRef.com website to cross match. This is what they list for the Ditzler color code for Ivory:

As others have said I would be really careful with the formulas and have a small amount mixed up first.
