MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF Pedal Box Rebuild Tip
Hi Guys I have being reading through the archives and picking up loads of tips, so thanks for that. I just thought I would share a tip I discovered when rebuilding my RHD TF pedal box. I found that if you attach the brake spring to the pedal box and then to the pedal before you insert the rod it pivits on it makes the whole job a lot easier, turning the pedal sideways helps to get the spring into the hole in the pedal. Next slip the pivot rod through the pedal and finally connect the pedal to the push rod going to the master cylinder. Hope this helps. Regards Darry |

Did you cut the access hole in the bottom of the pedal box? Do you have a cover plate for it? |

The round hole in the bottom has always been there. I assumed that was the same for all TFs. It's perfectly symmetrical. There is a panel to cover the whole at the side. |

Without a bottom cover, it probably will be an invitation for road dirt. |

Plan to fit some sort of a rubber bung in there. Just checked a number of pictures from different sources of pedal boxes and all appear to have the round hole.....but no cover. Thanks for the advice they can get very grimy. |

I guarantee that the interior of the box will get grimy and ruin all your hard work with all the grit. The rubber plug is the answer. |

I have the same round hole in the pedal box of my TF. A rubber plug is probably a good idea. regards, Jan |

Darry, This 50mm grommet will fit. You can see it on the right of the photo. http://www.ebay.de/itm/221289101517?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&var=520175852706&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I also do a gaiter which I make for my improved clutch linkages which also seals off the front of the pedal box. It can be used on the standard linkage. It is attached with rare earth magnets-see next photo. Regards Declan |

Gaiter detail 2. The NBR gaiter is not cheap as I only have one source. Declan |

I am considering doing a "Seal your pedal box" kit and would include a seal (not the cover)in rubber or cork. Declan |

Thanks Declan I would buy the kit. Thanks for the heads up on the gromit. Where can the gaiter be bought. Definitely on for sealing up that box. They can get really manky! |

Darry, The NBR gaiter manufacturer is Halltech.de but they will not sell to the public-trade only. I get them through my mate's business account. I'll do some pricing on that kit. Regards Declan |

Declan, will your kit (including the improved clutch rod) work for a late (Feb '53) TD? How much? I want one. Thanks. Jud jchapin3 at aol dot com |

And don't forget to put the fume excluder and peddle boot in place befoer pinning the peddles in the box. Don't ask how I know... DOAH! |

Jud, The stainless steel clutch rods will indeed fit the 53 TD and also the TF and if the car is LHD there are no collision problems with the exhaust. On RHD rods I use a different thinner rose joint and attachment to prevent collision. To fit both the upper and the lower rods, the Mike 'O'Conner mod must be done on the lever otherwise there is a rose joint collision. These rods eliminate all play from the clutch linkage-rose joints all the way and no clevis pins that wear and cause play. The gaiter is my latest mod and I will have to check if I can get the gaiters at a better price. I have sent you an email with pricing on the clutch rods. Regards Declan |
