MG TD TF 1500 - MGTF acceleration noise / rattle

Hi. I recently purchased a TF after owning an F for a few years. Since I've been driving the TF, I'm hearing an annoying rattle-type sound coming from under the car when I accelerate. It is worse when the revs are low (around 2000rpm). It's hard to describe the sound but it's not like a plastic or metal type rattle - more like it could be a hole in the exhaust or something. It seems to be coming from the middle area of the car but difficult to pinpoint... def underside/below the car though. It's not that loud so i can try to forget it's there but it's starting to irritate me a bit!

I would be really grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks in advance
Ben

Ben,
If you are not in gear, standing still, and you bring the engine to 2000 RPM, do you hear the noise ? If you only hear it when accelerating, is it only on HARD acceleration ?

I think that you are on the wrong TF thread. This is the 54-55 MG TF's. They always rattle!

Somehow me thinks this is a newer mgtf and not one of the earlier ones this list is for.

Whichever model (old or new) sounds like part of the exhaust system is very near or touching the frame and when revved to a certain RPM sets up a harmonic and rattles against the frame causing the very unpleasant sound. Solution: remove the entire exhaust system and get used to liking the constant roar.

Ben:
I had a similar annoying "noise" experience with my TD several years ago - a combination buzz/rattle/hum that occurred at various RPM's and road speeds. All pipe hangers, brackets, clamps and exhaust system clearances were checked and re-checked to no avail. Following the third try - out of frustration - I whacked the muffler with my fist. It rattled ... a baffle inside the muffler had broken loose. You may want to try this approach if all else fails ... I'd recommend wearing a glove. Ron
