MG TD TF 1500 - MGTF debut 2002
Yes, you heard right. The MGF is to be slightly re-styled with new suspension and is to be renamed the MG TF. It will be shown at brussels on Jan 15. Don't they know there is all ready an MG TF??? Where does this "T" come from???? This badge-enginered rover will replace the MGF. |

Have just found a picture at http://www.carkeys.co.uk/features/FE000333.htm |

From that feature: "While the original TF was the last of the traditionally styled separate-front-wings MG sports cars, and very much a minor facelift by a cheese-paring BMC, the new car, which will go on sale in February, is a proper engineering development of the MGF." ..uh? am I missing something here? Puh-leeze. |

Ian The MG-MGF and the 2002 MG-mgtf are 'badge engineered' Rovers in the same way as the 1953(?) MGTF was a badge engineered Morris! So come on mate lets not be stupid! Ted |
Ted Newman |
Cyril If you read some of the other articles you will see that the new 'F' is a lot more than just a face lift! New Sub Frames, New suspension, Restyled Body, uprated engines - and that is just what I remember! Ted |

four things - good going for you Ted. |

Am sorry for you" real" TF Guys They should have chosen a different name like the F Mk3, ZF or X-30 since the front looks like the future X-80 PS There are lots more website addresses for pictures on the MGF General BBS |

I think Andrew is right, they could have come up with a more imaganitve name rather than go back to the 1950's. Ted - I think the real TF was more than badge engineering and has infinitly more in common with previous MGs than the new rover. Don't get me wrong - it's not that I hate the new car or anything they just shouldn't use "TF" if they want to call it an MG as that model aready exsists! |

Ian, So now my 48 year old MG has become a NEW car. I can hardly wait for the letter from my insurance company recinding my historic car status! Call me biased but my 53 TF has infiniteley more character than the 2002 edition. Let one park alongside at the next car show and we shall see which draws the most attention! Wonder if the new TF will be allowed in the New England MGT register.......or is the "T" silent? |

An unfortunate choice of names to be sure! I hope not to hear of a "new" M type or a "new" C type! The most unfortunate part after seeing the web site pictures (see link above) is WHY IS IT NOT COMING TO THE USA???? It is damn good looking! |
Robert Dougherty |
For those of you who missed the original press release, the 'new' MgTF was named such because 1. The old TF was and is the most beautiful car MG ever produced and they wanted to lean on that fame, and 2. The new TF will never go to the states so the there will be no 'name competition' as most of the original TF's are in the States. All of this was in the Times months ago. Sir Fredridck Knowhish*t |

I only found out on Wednesday!! What about us British owners! I suppose I will just have to get over it :-( |
Ian Elrick |
The MGTF just has to be the most stupid thing Rover has ever done. What idiot would associate that thing with real MG TF? If they are looking to cash in on the great MG names, why not call the damned thing an MGK3? I have no problem with the MGF, if you like that sort of modern car, but to a 'T' Type guy - it's a joke. Barry, take 3 deep breaths and lie down. This is not worth falling down over. Dave. |
capdave |
I know, Dave, but it just bugs me, the same as the Twin Cam folks who call their cars TCs, instead of T/Cs. Not important, I guess, but just not proper form. Barry |
Barry12 |
Barry, I expect that the MGA TC (MG MGA TC to give its full name) is less likely to cause confusion than MG TF and MGTF (MGR MGTF in full I think). |
dan |
Dan, I think I'm going to be sick! Barry |

I'm an MGB owner, but I admire the original TF. I'm amongst those who wish that MG had chosen another name. MGR was short-sighted in their choice. The "TF" should stand alone in the history of the Marque, not be a source of confusion. |

Surely this horse is good and dead by now. #1. |
