MG TD TF 1500 - Miss-fire
I get a mis-fire on our TF 1500 above 3000 rpm when the engine is under load (climbing a slight incline). It has been most elusive since I keep thinking I have solved the problem--- and then it returns. I have replaced points, plugs and condensor. Carbs have bee rebuilt by SU guru, Jim Taylor. Compression is nearly the same in all cylinders (all around 170 psi). Gas tank has been drained and replenished with fresh fuel. Distributor has been rebuilt. I am considering testing with an ignition analyzer and performing a leak-down test. Your advice would be much appreciated. Ben |

Ben, Did you check to make sure that your distributor is giving you maxium advance of 32 degrees? Could be a problem with the weights or springs. Cheers Phil |

Have you checked the plug wire connections inside the distributor and the plug ends? Rotors also are prone to break down under load- Dallas |

Check your cap for cracks or carbon tracks. Clean it thoroughly. ... and check your voltage when running. Clip a voltmeter on somewhere and really look at the voltage, don't assume it is up. |

This happened to me about a week or two ago with my B. 65 MPH holding steady at around 3K. Cut out like I was losing fuel. I replaced the rotor and it went away until it came back. The red rotors are supposedly better but I happened to have another black one. I'm in the process of buying 10 to keep on hand for the cars I've been working on or re-sell if needed by others. Could it be water in your fuel? |

Ben I recently had the same type of problem. It turned out to be the condensor and believe me I switched out a couple of points plates before biting the bullet and fastening a new condensor on to a points plate and the car is running the best it has ever run. We have put many hundreds of miles on it already this summer and it is great. Brian |

I'm with Phil on this one: "advance of 32 degrees... problem with the weights or springs". Do you notice "chatter" from shifter in 4th gear? If my timming or advance is "off" I get a tale-tail chatter from my gearshift in 4th and a loss of power, oh course. |

Bad coil also possible, check the HT wire going into the coil also. |
