MG TD TF 1500 - Mixing Oil Varieties
I'm currently running Quaker State 10W-40 regular green bottle oil but am due for a change in about a month. I shopped this morning for a quart of QS to top it up in the interim (down about 1/2 quart after a 260 mile run so I'm not too unhappy). Next to the green bottle QS was a red bottle of QS 10W-40 that said "Boosted Zinc for Extra Protection." I bought two quarts but when I got home I noticed that it's a synthetic blend. Can I mix this QS Defy synthetic blend with the QS regular green bottle that I have in the car or do I need to take these quarts back and exchange them? Thanks. Jud |

Jud, can't answer your question but what parts store carry this stuff? I'm due. Ed |

Ed, I bought it at Advance Auto parts in Greer. Don't know if all AAP stores carry it. I hadn't seen it before. Jud |

Jud, As far as I know you can mix the two you just don't get all the benefits of straight synthetic. There have been a lot of threads on oil here on the forum so you might try searching to obtain a more informed answer. Jim |

Thanks Jim. That's good enough for me. Since it says Synthetic BLEND I assume it's a blend of synthetic and natural(?) so mixing it with more natural should be OK. Anyway, I hope so. Jud |

And what exactly does "boosted Zinc" mean? Should be 1200 PPM for our cars... |

from mobil oil ok in a pinch, "...However, it is not recommended to routinely mix oils because the additives in different products may interact or the oils may become destabilized by the mixture. You may reduce or negate the properties of the additives. You'll lose the benefits of the more expensive synthetic oil. So, adding regular oil to your special synthetic oil will mean you'll need to get your oil changed sooner than you would have otherwise...." regards, tom |

I searched on the bottle and on the website link from JE and I can't find any specifications for the zinc content. Just more I guess. Anyway, here's what QS says about mixing synthetic and conventions oil: Want to know the inside scoop on some of today's most notorious oil myths within the automotive world? Well we've got you covered. Select a myth from the pull-down below, and we'll give you nothing but the facts. Switching between synthetic and conventional Myth: You can't switch from synthetic oil to conventional oil or mix the two. You may interchange synthetic and conventional oil as long as the synthetic motor oil product and conventional motor oil product meet the viscosity and performance requirements outlined in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Synthetic blends, in fact, are a mixture of conventional and synthetic-base oils. So sayeth QS. Jud |

Jud, I was hoping that the Quaker State link would be helpful. Sometimes when oil is the topic it's time for popcorn. :-) Anyway, I think they're clear that it does no harm. Jim |
