MG TD TF 1500 - Mk I Spridget starter in TD/TF?

Well, the week-end’s a wash-out. My starter packed up on me last night - broken mainspring.

I’m at 6's and 9' as to whether to rebuild it. I can have the parts - same day (Monday); Or try the Mk I Spridget starter which I think I may have out in my “unsorted” parts box in my shed. I believe I have read on the BB, that this will work on a TD/TF.

If there’s someone out there that can confirm that this does indeed work, I’d like to hear from them. Also my TF is a positive earth. Does this matter with the Spridget starter?

They are one in the same Gordon except for the olive green color. I have a junker 62 Sprite in the shop and used the drive gear off the starter for the TF as it was in much better shape and a better match for the new ring gear.

Gotta go with LaVerne there Gordy, when my starter packed up on my TF, pulled a spridget starter off the parts bin shelf and it is still working like a charm. Direct bolt in replacement.

Go for the midget starter. They are the same.

Gord,
You might have to file the head of one of the two long bolts that hold the starter together,,, some times the head sits on the mounting flange and does not alow a flat mounting,, I had to do this to my midget starter in our TD,, but it works just fine, and a lot less expensive !!

I forgot to add that the head of the bolt that might have to be filed off is cu*tersunk into the starter so it will still hold perfectly,,

I gothca Steve. My "spare" starter is for a Sunbeam Alpine and not a good one, at that. So I'll repair it tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up on the bolt.
