300567863130 TD/C 9748. Non-original engine, missing Andrex shocks, 2nd fuel pump and fuel line. Carbs perhaps not TD/C original, but can't be sure; wrong badging, lacks correct right-side bonnet with bulge. Looks fine from 10'. Described by seller as decent driver. So-far $2,550, reserve not met. 220799521371 TD/C 20750. Loud paint, unattractive dash, upholstery, carpet and Nardi steering wheel. Seems to be missing Andrex shocks. Also missing door checks, suggestive of a quick-and-dirty job. Has correct carbs, and a large air filter unit. So-far $8900, reserve not met. Driver. 250827456441 TD/C 23510 Ultra-restored car, very nicely done, but not quite the "100-point car" the dealer describes. Can't tell about Andrex shocks (no mention), has correct carbs and a large air filter. Correct badging with rear bumper plinth. Buy-it-now at $48,900 OBO. My $.02. Tom Lange Bar Harbor, Maine |

Tom, When I saw the number plate on the yellow car, I doubted the authenticity...it looked like the "3" in TD3, was a strike-over. Then I noticed the same thing on the third car. Is this a common thing that was done at the factory? |
Steven Tobias |
Steve - yes, the factory often used TD2 plates to identify TD3 engines, where they simply overstamped the 2 with a 3. I've seen a few dozen like that. The stamping is definitely factory. The first TD3 engine was in TD/C 16811, made on June 4, 1952. It's nice when sellers show such good close-ups of the ID plate; a world of info is therein contained. The "TD/C" down South a few weeeks ago had repop ID and body tags, and that alone raised suspicions - in that case, rightly so! I've had various conversations with folks about whether repop plates are a good idea. I bought a barn-find "TD" on eBay recently, where the ID plate demonstrated that the engine was not the original - a real mongrel of a car. I noticed TD/C front a-arms and space for a second fuel pump, did some checking, found that the engine in the car was a genuine TD/C engine, and I had the seller verify the hidden number was for the matching TD/C chassis. It's a genuine TD/C with matching numbers. The confusion was that the ID plate had been swapped from an entirely different, non-TD/C car. So my car will need a proper TD/C ID plate, and am grateful that people like Doug Pelton offer them. Others feel they are a recipe for disaster, and open many doors to deception. I'm always happy to help with any TD/C questions. Tom Lange Bar Harbor, Maine |

Tom, That was the most thoughtful and concise analysis of Ebay vehicals I've ever read. warmly, dave |
Dave Braun |
Tom, Thank you...and I second what Dave B. said! I have a late TD (24855) and the engine had the correct number on it. Years ago, when I changed spark plugs for the first time, I found that they were short reach plugs. It turned out, of course, that I have an early head on the car. When I redid the bottom end some years ago, I determined that I had an early block as well, based on the oil pick-up. One day, I would like to verify the casting number, to be certain. If it is indeed the wrong block, someone did a masterful job of switching the engine tag! |
Steven Tobias |
Steve - many engines also have the ID number stamped on the pad just above the brass engine tag, often covered with paint and crud. You may be able to find the number with close examination. Tom |

Thank you, Dave - especially coming from you, I consider that high praise indeed. I do like looking at Mark II/TDC cars Tom |

Where can you obtain a list of the TD MK II's Cheers, Barry |

In the "MG T-Series the Complete Story", (a very interesting book) is a table of the MKII total numbers made for each year. 1950 31 1951 470 1952 983 1953 226 Out of this total of 1,710 1,593 were for the Export North America market. Mike |

Barry - I am working on a history of Mark IIs and can answer questions. I have put together some lists. Tom, Bar Harbor, Maine |

FYI - the first one, the green one, sold for $14,800 The loud yellow one sold for $14,600 The restored car was a no-sale with Buy-it-now of $48,900. If anyone on the list bought either of the cars I would be happy to hear from them. Tom |

Follow-up: sale of the first car, the green one, did not go through on eBay, so the car is for sale again. Tom |

And for the sake of total accuracy, the Andrex shocks for the green car DO come with it, although they need rebuilding. Tom |
