MG TD TF 1500 - Modified oil filter for early TD.

I have the remote oil filter on my engine. It is a real pain to remove the bottom of the oil filter housing to change the filter. Does anyone have a source for the modified oil filter canister that accepts a modern filter?

Thanks

You can buy a spin-on filter adapter from Bob Grunau (Canada), Roger Furneaux (UK) or Butch Taras (California). Doug Pelton (Arizona) also resells them.

Steve, thanks very much.

Steve,

Can you please provide contact info for the gentlemen you mentioned for the modified oil filter?

Thanks!

Mike, here's what I found when looking up the names Steve gave me:

Butch Taras

Doug Pelton

Bob Grunau

I bought Bob's version and it has worked very well. Use a longer filter, it's easier to get it out from below with a strap wrench...

Geoffrey, three of the filter adapters I've seen look identical but the prices range from $90 to over $200. You probably did some research before buying yours. If I could pick your brain, are you aware of any differences that would justify the disparity in prices?

Thanks

Honestly, Tim, when I wanted to install an oil filter system (the car had none, although in the past at some point someone had adapted a Sears oil filter and installed it, then removed the connections later), I didn't get any recommendations other than Bob Grunau. Perhaps Doug or Butch were not making them, but for some reason, I just found Bob's. It's worked fine for me. So I can't really comment except to say that both Butch and Doug have great reputations.
Sorry I can't help on that question :)

Perfect, Tim.

I believe Butch makes the adapters that Doug sells. After Phil Marino passed away several years ago, Butch took over the design and manufacturing of several of Phil's parts. I have one of the old Phil Marino units and it works and fits great. Butch has made an improvement or two in the design since then. Last I inspected both units (several years ago), the main visual difference between the parts made by Butch/Phil and Bob is the side hose connection. On Bob's they are hexagonal and on Butch's they are round.

The filter I've found to fit and function best is K&N HP-2009. I've used them for the past decade on four of my cars. Wix and Napa Gold also have quality units that fit although I don't recall the part numbers.

Geoffrey, no problem. Thank you.

Steve, thank you for the information. Much appreciated.

I would also suggest you look at Flexolite. www.flexolite.co.uk The have a spin on filter adapter for TD/TF for about $50 US. Full disclosure, I have not yet installed and used mine but I also have one which is nearly identifcal on my classic Alfa and it has worked flawlessly for 4 years without leaking

I purchased one from Butch, made nice and fitted perfectly, made life a little easier,

Hi Guys,

About 30 years ago I made some oil filter conversions for my own TCs, my brother's TC and his Y-Tourer. From above they look like original TC/TD/Y. From below they have a central bolt because I used the canister from Wolseley 4/44 (same as later TD/TF etc). They take the same filter as TF and MGA/MGB etc (Ryco R2058P).

They are time consuming to make, so would only be worth-while if you want original looks and can do it yourself. They are complicated because the direction of flow is changed to suit modern filters (outside to inside).

I have attached an image (which includes diagram) from my article in a 1988 magazine, just in case anyone wants to copy it. I will attach an image of the previous (first) page of the article in the next post.
