MG TD TF 1500 - More oil filter ???? Early TD
I'm having to flush the water contamination out of my fresh motor from the porous Laystall issue. I have the new style Moss replacement element vertical oil canister installed. Is there a filter that I can use from the local parts store instead of the moss elements which I have to order? brand and Part #s? I also have a new spin on style adaptor from Bob Gruneau I picked up at GOFWEST but it didn't have a filter or instruction sheet with it. What spin on filter gets used with that set up? Since I'm going to have to do several run and flushes I would like to have something readily available Regards Bill Chasser jr TD4834 |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
I use a spin-on adapter with K&N HP-2009 filter. Works beautifully and has a handy 1" nut welded on bottom. Another advantage of the nut is that if the filter is painted, it takes on a fairly convincing period "canister" look. |
Steve Simmons |
Bill. I swapped mine out for a spin on years back and still have the aluminum unit that has the replaceable filter. I have a new filter if you want to go that way. I am going to catch hell from the group, but I run a Fram 43 on my spin on. |

I have a FRAM PH3600 installed on my spin on adapter from Bob Grunau. I like it because it's a bit longer than some of the other acceptable filters, which means it's easier to spin off from below. Thanks everyone. I went to my local parts house last night manually checking for one to fit the newest Moss canister but came up empty from the selection on the shelves. Would still like to find a a non Moss replacement for for it. Steve, Bruce, Geoffrey and Dave. Thanks for the lists for Bob's spin on adapter Cheers Bill Chasser Jr TD4834 |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Bill, If you go spin-on, with a little effort, you can grab a photo of any of the markings on period canisters, print it and glue it to a re-painted spin-on filter followed with a clear finish. Won't fool a concourse judge, but it looks quite convincing to the casual observer. And looks better than seeing "FRAM".

I've never worked with a vertical oil filter (lucky, I guess). Does the same spin-on filter fit both Bob's horizontal and vertical filter adapters? Bud |
Bud Krueger |
Two different spin-on adapters are made for vertical and horizontal oil pumps. The vertical spin-on looks basically like a dummy top 2/3 of a factory vertical can filter, drilled and tapped for the oil pipes to attach, and for the filter clamps to hold it firmly in place. The filter itself screws on and becomes the bottom third of the unit, short enough to clear the clutch rods (that's the one limitation). The horizontal adapter is just a 1" thick, threaded circle that screws onto the pump housing, to which the filter screws. Either one is a 15-minute fit, and well worth the money - I do it as standard to every car that comes into the shop. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
t lange |
Thanks, Tom. In that case it sounds as if the answers above are for the wrong adapter. The PH3600/NAPA1516 are for the horizontal adapter, not the vertical one. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
I don't think so, Bud; my adapter is a vertical unit taking a PH3600 filter. I can't speak for the horizontal units, though. |
Geoffrey M Baker |
Okay, Geoff, I see the word's in Toms message that could make that so, "becomes the bottom third". Gee, I'd love to see an image of a vertical adapter. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
Bud, the engine is out. When I get it back in I'll try to remember to take and post some pictures. In the meantime, here is a picture grabbed of the web of a vertical adapter that looks pretty much identical to mine (tho I don't recognize the filter)...

Unipart is the "official" Leyland, BMC, Jaguar OE parts supplier in the UK (I believe) and in the USA. Not sure if a GFE 443 is an item stocked in the USA. |
John Quilter (TD8986) |
Geoffrey - As I wrote above, be sure the oil filter will clear the clutch rods; the filter you show in the picture might be a bit too long. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
t lange |
Tom, that's not my engine :) I've never had a problem with the clutch rods and I think my filter is at least as long as that... I will check this issue carefully when my engine comes back (next week, fingers crossed) and I start reassembly of systems... |
Geoffrey M Baker |
Sorry. Got my filters mixed up between the TD and the B. I use a Fram PH3600 on my vertical adapter in the TD. No issues with clearance with the clutch rods. |

You know, over the years I've heard a lot of put downs on Fram filters and I won't go into the various comments. So let me tell you a little story about what we used over the years. On our Caterpillar engines we used Cat filters, Cummings, filters from Cummings, reason, warranty, on everything else we used Fram filters. On the vehicles we changed filters every 3000 miles or 100 hrs of running time, some vehicles would idle all day and never shut down. Welding machines and air compressors got Fram filters. Now at oil changes, samples were sent out for analysis, but saying that, we never had an engine go bad due to inefficient oil filtering. So to those who think Fram filters are bad, so be it, but I know better. We bought them 3 and 4 cases at a time. Just sayin. PJ |

Years ago there was a guy who did some analysis on a bunch of filters and posted it on the web. You can probably still find it out there. IIRC, the analysis consisted of cutting apart the filters and opining on the quality of materials and construction of the filters. I don't think he did any flow or filtration tests, per se. His conclusion was that Fram was one of the cheapest if not the cheapest made filter and (I think) Wix came out on top. The guy got a lot of grief from Fram for that and had to move his website a couple of times, though I don't think he was completely shut down. In any case, I think Fram's reputation got smeared because of that and people still tend to think of them as inferior oil filters. However, though they may be cheaply made, perhaps they still do an adequate job of filtering oil, IDK. Again, that was a number of years ago, so I have no idea whether Fram has changed their filters since then, for better or worse. Personally, I use Fram filters and don't worry about it. |

Paul When I owned a small logtruck fleet we ran Cat filters but also ran centrifuges because we had the pumps turned up. The fleet consisted of 3406, 3408 and my Toy Truck had a 3412DITTA (derated to 900hp except for dyno challenges at Caterpillar truck Shows) shoehorned into it, But I digress... Even with quality filters, the centrifuge would spin out an ounce of carbon from the oil. We changed oil religiously every 5000mi and had Cat analize the oils for breakdown. 5000 mi was the best we could do because of the heavy metal particulates that were from the extreme environments and over-fueled systems. Thanks Geoffrey and Bruce, I'll look into the PH3600 for the Gruneau spin on unit. The main question which hasn't been answered yet: Is there a replacement filter available for the modern Moss vertical units that I can get from my local parts house? Cheers Bill Chasser Jr TD4834 |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Pep Boys often carries the K&N HP-2009 that I run. Or go to Napa and get their Gold Series filter in an equivalent part number. Both are excellent filters. Otherwise just hop on Amazon and order a couple. Should arrive in two days. I use them on several cars so I usually order up a whole box and when I'm down to one or two, just order another.
|
Steve Simmons |
Bill, I've been in your footsteps before on this one. One year I had one left and that was the year that Moss couldn't get them. Before I installed it I went to a tractor supply to see if they could match it up and walked away empty handed. I ended up with the spin on conversion from Butch Taras. Never regretted it. I just paint the filter either silver or engine red before I put it on. |
Keith Yarbrough(TD 1275) |
Hi Keith I see Lawrie is building your trans. should have had me do it.I thought you had that thing out several mos ago for a clutch what happened? |
W. A. Chasser Jr |
Bill, I thought the growling was normal until I went to GOF. Mine was a little louder and more metallic than everyone else. I had a guy look at it when it was out and he blessed it as healthy but it just didn't sound right so we're trying again. Lawrie had some extra parts and the price was right. |
