MG TD TF 1500 - Moss Motors solid state fuel pumps, any feedback?

Digging through the fuel system on my TD and it's a bit of a mess. Fueld pump has definately seen better days. The backlight assembly on the end is all broke and crumbled. Diaphram is shot, filter is shot. It's pretty much shot.

So it would cost me more to rebuild than to replace pretty much. In looking at Moss they show a new model SU that is solid state but looks fairly original. They also show a new model solid state that is much cheaper but does not look original. Abingdon shows what must be rebuilts.

That new style Moss unit is a third the cost of the SU style. Mighty tempting, especially since thre is a lot to my TD that is not as original. My goal is to have a nice runner, not looking for a show winner. Any of you have experience with these solid state pumps.

For another option see my posting on 12 April, "SU fuel pump." I picked up a rebuilt and warrantied original SU Type L fuel pump for my TD from Lawrie Rhoads for $95. Lawrie also has pumps for the TF.

I have a friend who has one of those cube electronic pumps from Moss and it has worked for him. I bought their electronic version of the SU pump (made by Burlen, the current owner in the UK) and it has worked fine for a couple of years now.

Burlen also sells for 40 pounds a module to eliminate the points and upgrade to the electronic version. Both of these options look as original.

Note that all of the parts for the fuel pumps are available new at fairly reasonable prices. See Burlen's website at
http://www.burlen.co.uk/

I have ordered from them directly and they are very responsive and fast. I get things from Royal Mail that they send faster than domestic UPS.

One of the guys on this BBS also makes a solid state module for the fuel pump, and may have replacement bakelite parts that you need.

I try to keep my car looking original.

I Rutt - I had an answer to your questions mostly written but lost it when I went to the Moss web site to research the prices (I'm trying to type in a motel room sitting in an easy chair in front of a table that puts the computer about level with my chin). E-mail me directly at the above address before you make any decisions about a new fuel pump. I am the guy that Larry refers to who does solid state modifications for the pumps and I know that any one of the people who rebuilds the pumps can do much better on prices than what you can get from Moss and the rebuilds that Lawrie Rhoads (he did the rebuilding) is an excellent value. Cheers - Dave

PS. See my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ There are articles on the fuel pumps that will be of interest to you (including the NAPA part number for the little square solid state pump offered by Moss). There are also other articles, including a chart for the fasteners for the XPAG engines.

great, some real good news here. I too would like to keep it original looking so may go the way of electronic module in the original housing. I'll be in touch.

Wow, Just went through Dave Dubois's website. I'm really liking the idea of electronic 'innards' in my old pumps. And as I have a MKII with dual fuel lines from the tank, I could get 2 pumps built up and mounted on the fire wall looking as standard but only using one with the other in place as a spare.

I'm kind of fond of good ol' points in an SU fuel pump. They last a really long time & are much easier to roadside repair.

I rutt --- Thats what I do, the wire to connect the pumps is on the one not in use. So I have the option of using both pumps or moving the active wire to the "spare" pump. That has saved my a*s twice when a bunch of stuff came off the inside of the tank and jammed up the pump in use. I have always thought the stuff was fuel residue from long storage with fuel in the tank. Had to have a new bottom put in the tank.

Cheers,

Bob
