MG TD TF 1500 - Moss Wiring Harness

I'm not pleased with Mosses wiring harness! When paying over $450.00 for a wire harness, you would think it would include all bullet connectors and all stub wires to hook up the lights etc. No single bullet connectors came with it, only the doubles on the harness and no short light connecting wires with the bullets on one end. To late for me now, as I bought this 3 years ago, but now have to make up the damn wires missing and the bullets. Just letting anyone know, make sure you know what your getting before buying one! Had I have known this, I would have bought it from Brown & Gammons not Moss! PJ

Paul,
Your situation interests me has I will be going through this myself very soon. The car I recently purchased came with a new Moss harness that was purchased many years ago. Looking at the Moss online catalog they show a sub-harness (part #356-161). Would that maybe be the parts you are missing?

Paul,

I have a 30 year old NEW harness as well and will probably face the same problem. I was just going to make the missing stuff but based on DHN's comments, maybe there's a better way.

Keep us posted.

I've been a critic of Moss for about a year now & what I don't get is why we continue to bother with them. I even went to the extent of speaking to the CEO of the Western Division in April alerting him to 17 items that I was personally aware of that were ill fitting, nothing like the original part or actually damaged the car! He promised action but I've heard nothing since. Since then, add an ignition switch that actually sets fire to the car! I'd love to compile a list with input from other BBS contributors but I'd probably get rubbished... As I said to the CEO I wonder what Al would think of what has become of the little business he started all those years ago. I'm just thankful that alternatives to Moss & the other business that just sells Moss stuff, do exist. Cheers

My harness is in two sections, the main section which runs down the chassis to the rear pump and lights and a separate harness for under the dash and firewall hook ups. Only the stub ends are missing and the single bullet connectors. I can make these up, it just ticks me off that I should have to. PJ

The Moss harnesses I have seen over the years have been beautiful. I recall the headlamp and sidelamp pigtails have never been included, nor was the dash sub-harness. Some of the bullet connectors are intentionally not installed, as the wires may need to be adjusted and cut to length. Remember, these are all reproduction, non-factory parts. Part of the fun of the hobby is making stuff work. I started with my TD in the 70s, very little was available at all then. I'm so thankful for Moss, if not for them (and ASL), likely none of our cars would be on the road. If you want to directly bolt on a part that fits perfectly, get a Miata or something. Just my thoughts. George

Well, I don't know who made the harness I have. It came with the project and looks good. The ends are not made up and I understand why. Some stuff is missing but may be simply that I have to order it.

Paul, I bought the main harnesses from Moss for both the TF and the TD. The harness for the TC we worked on last year came from British Wiring.

I had no issues at all for the TF harness. It came with a supply of bullet connectors.

I bought a TD harness designed for adding turn signals to an earlier car. I did have some minor issues with it as to where it would allow the flasher and relay to be mounted.

In each case I had to buy sub harnesses for the dash and the head light/ front turn signals. My beef with Moss is that they didn't list them and I purchased them from Abbingdon Spares.

The TC's have a number of harness choices with where the car went to and when it was built and if you want to add turn signals. The harness we received was "just" long enough at the control box but it really needed at least another inch there. It lacked bullet connectors that should have clearly been on some wire ends in the dash area. The harness at the rear had additional wiring at the rear for a 3rd brake light. Nice feature but it wasn't requested or used. In addition the harness was about 3 to 4 feet longer than it should have been at the rear. It also required separate sub harnesses for the dash/headlight/park lamps and the rear tail lights. Due to the fact that I would have had to remove the cloth covering to shorten up the rear harness correctly, I instead chose to fold the additional length back along the frame. In addition in came with zero bullet connectors. I used a number of old ones I had on hand but I got British Wiring to send me some at no charge so I could finish the job.

I tell you this, just so you will have something for comparison.

I am on my third restoration, a TF having previously completed a TC and TD. On each car I have used British Wire and had ZERO problems with the harness. They also are extremely helpful and conscientious. Can't see going to Moss when you can buy direct from a vendor. Also, for each car I have used AS almost exclusively and have a great relationship with their staff. At times their prices may seem higher but in the majority cases I have found them to be of the best quality and not from China. I have concluded you get what you pay for. Moss has never been my first source so when I need a part AS usually has had it in the past in order to keep the project moving forward. If you have a problem with them call Bobbie and if she can't help, call the owner Bob Seymour at his farm in CT.
I guess to each his own......

I purchased my harness from British Wiring for my 51 TD and got a harness that added turn signals. The first harness I received was not what I wanted due to where the wiring for the flasher and turn signal units were located but British Wiring was quick to send another harness. I now have 99% of it installed and everything was the correct length and location. I did have to buy additional bullet connectors and the sub dash wiring was not included but Craig Seabrook restored my dash and it came all wired up ready to go.

I've received parts from Moss with Abingdon stickers on them and parts from Abingdon with Moss stickers. Just saying...

I made a wiring harness up myself. I had the wiring diagram in the manual blown up to A4 size and modified it to incorporate relays and extra fuses using a pencil and typists correction fluid. I bought thin wall, correctly coloured cables from Vehicle Wiring Products. Their catalogue shows the current carrying capacity of all sizes of cable and I was able to calculate the sizes I needed. I then laid out the wires on the car and temporarily fastened them with masking tape before testing. I finished the job with Tessa Tape which does a first class, very original looking job.

Well I dug into my MGB drawers and found a whole bag of new bullet connectors, singles, doubles and triples. Now I need to order the bullet for the wire ends. Would NAPPA have these or is that asking to much? PJ

In a word.... no.
