MG TD TF 1500 - My 52 TD Fog Lamp Experience
Prior to beginning the wiring of my new fog lamps, I consulted this site and read many threads about what to expect. There were some variations of the experiences you guys had. Now that I did it, here’s mine.
First I wanted to be sure the forward loom had in fact contained the wiring connected to my switch. I did a sounding trace and verified that there was a termination buried in the jacket under the radiator. The trace signal ended where the loom was strapped to the steering rack housing. I began to remove the wrapping and found that a separate wrap was used to enclose the red and yellow wire termination from the fog lamp switch. The remaining wires were separately wrapped, no need to rewrap those. About eight inches of this wire was exposed so you could verify that it had the correct color code and the remaining length was separately jacketed. When you rewrapped the unjacketed portion to the loom, the remaining jacketed length was exactly what was needed to reach the fog lamps located on the badge bar. The wire was terminated with a male crimped on barrel plug. To get power to the fog lamp switch, I simply disconnected the red power connector from the “T” terminal off the ignition switch which connects to the lights and made up a "Y" cable that reconnects the lights and adds a power pickup for the fog lamps. Before connecting to the switch, I added a fuse holder. I hope this helps other newbies like me answer some of the questions I had. If some of you pros see anything wrong please advise. Mike, That will work but is unnecessarily complex. You should already have a red wire from the T terminal of the ignition switch to the panel light switch. All you needed to do was add a red wire on this terminal to the empty terminal of the fog light switch. That is how it is wired originally. you can see this in the wiring diagram. John 52 TD |

Thanks for the help John. The wiring diagram is very helpful. My problem was I couldn't get the access I needed to the ignition switch to make that connection without pulling the dash. I was able to do what I did easily from under the dash. Mike TD15250 |

Mike, the fog light switch wiring should have already been there from the wiring harness. Or, did you not buy the dash harness? Bud |

Mike, I agree that access to the underdash is a pain, however, unless your car has non standard mods and updates, most jobs are doable. Of course you do need to remove the seats then gain access this area by lying on your back. John |

Bud, the harness already had the wiring from the switch to the forward fog light location. There was no power connected to the switch however. I believe I have the original wiring harness in my car but since the fog lamps were optional, the switch power was not wired. Mike |

Hi Mike, I might suggest you consider using the fog lamp switch to activate a relay which in turn would operate the fog lamps. I had my Lucas lamps at one time running through the fog light switch and it got rather warm. Bill TD24570 |
