MG TD TF 1500 - My finished dash...Not for the purist.
Well, I know some folks would rather have the "original" style, but with the large steering wheel, I just couldn't enter and exit the car comfortably, and the solid walnut dash was begging for refinishing...The gauge pod was in terrible shape. Anyway, I used 8 coats of automotive clear urethane on the wood (after removing the old finish, and re-staining the wood).... The vinyl inlay is from the left-over seat and panel covering. Bravo EB! You're joined a fine company of bandits and infidels. Great job on that dash. Here's my contribution to dash-bound moral disorder and impure automobiles. There's still snow on the northern prairie, but this week, by Cecil B. Kimber, we'll pull TD27991 our of the shop, put 12 volts [of negative ground - gasp and concern] to her, warm her up, then pull a 6000 rpm supercharged burnout on those fat Michelins and let the season begin. Cheers, Dave |

Very pretty Dave! I'm glad there exists a group of radicals, for me to join! Edward |

I too put a walnut dash in my 51. My feeling is if it is a British Sports car, it should have a wooden dash. Those dashes look great.. |

Although my TD still has the original type dash finish, I have to admire the wood paneled dash. I wonder if it would be worthy of a separate (or this one) to post pictures of all those wooden dashes? The owners have great reason to be proud of their handiwork. |

Here's another .100 yr old birds eye maple. I like it with the BRG ! Very "Dashing"

Here is the dash Craig Seabrook made for me E.B. I found the Zebra Wood veneer on ebay and even though he didn't necessarily like it I think it turned out awesome.

This one is not for purists either, but it does speak to the individualists. A "before" picture taken last year prior to the great dismantling. That is 22 years worth of dust on the windshield. My father did the dash circa 1968 in his one and only nod to the era. We all thought is was pretty cool at the time. We're at about 60% on the restoration. I might just keep the dash - for a while anyway. Jim |

Jim, Wouldn't it be nice if you change the dash, to keep your dads version for a display piece, as Mr Taylor did with his. Would be a tribute to your dad and a very interesting conversation piece. PJ |

EB, ...rounded the edges and left off the beading? Now you've gone and done it! seriously, very unique and quite nice! |

Steven That wood has been on the car at least since '78 (I found a date on the temp gauge, when the replacement was installed),so I can only take credit for the new finish, the red inlay, and the grab handle... I would have preferred a flat edge, but I wasn't going to mess with a 7/8" thick slab of walnut. I'm really happy to see so much diversity in these old cars. Edward |
