MG TD TF 1500 - My seat height problem in the GT

Yes, this is the TD Forum. Only I feel at home here since I still have my TD and feel people here are my friends.

I have written here about the problem I discovered when I tried the new MGB GT before buying it. I had almost no space between the steering wheel and my thigh, so it was very difficult to lift my right leg between the two pedals (left hand drive).
I only received the car a few days ago, and took it out in the light today for the first time. My MG-friend immediately spotted the problem: a previous owner had mounted an extra metal rail under the seats, in about a height of 1,5 inch!
It is going out as soon as possible!

Raymond,

You do need a metal packing strip under the seat. Some people reconfigure that as a Nylon packing strip.

See picture.

Warmly,
dave

If I recall from my MGB days long ago, the nylon strip is what the seat track slides on as it moves during adjustment on top of the lower track which is affixed to the floor. VW beetles had the same type of sandwich setup.

Been a few years but all I remember was the wood ones you show Dave along with the funky metal spacers.

Almost sounds as if the whole rail is in the wrong place.
When you were able to slide the seat back, did it touch the rear seat front?...If any space at all, it should be very close....
Other possibility is that the rake of the seat back is too vertical...
My GT had a huge space between the wheel and seat...
Finally, could the adjuster rails be on backwards?

But I have the wooden piece, and then a very high rail of 3,5 cm!

Raymond,

I think you've solved your problem!

See both pics of my MGB GT (driver's side as well as passenger's side).

I suppose some PO did mount an additional U-profile underneath the original rail.

Raymond, yours is elevated an extra few centimeters by that channel on its side that someone inserted there precisely to increase the seat height. Get rid of that and you'll be a happy man.
