MG TD TF 1500 - Near Carb Float Bowl Lid Needed
That title should have read as "Rear Carb" rather than "Near Carb" I am in need of a rear carb float bowl lid - one that has not had the pin assembly modified (I have never had trouble with fuel leakage at the pin). My 1950 TD has a front bowl lid on the rear bowl and I would like to correct this - so that it will be easier to remove the lid when the bowl is in the proper position. I would prefer a very good condition, used original rather than one of the very expensive re-manufactured pieces. Thanks in advance for any responses. |

As you are looking to fit handed lids to your TD Jeff, you probably know there has been considerable discussion on this point. YT's, TD2's & TF's all had handed lids, ie right hand lid @ the front & left hand lid @ the rear but those in the know believe the TD originally had two right hand lids fitted. I'm still not totally convinced of this. I find my interconnecting fuel line fits much better under the oil bath air filter with a left hand lid @ the rear. It may well be a case of early TD's were handed & the later were not. This handed issue may never be satisfactorily resolved. As your reason is not for originality but for "function over form" then happy hunting. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Hello Peter - Thanks so much for your input. I had read that earlier thread with interest. In following up on your comments, I looked carefully in the TD/TF shop manual and in my 1950 parts listing. I did find two factory drawings of the TD carb set up (each showing the carb bowls fitted with two right handed lids). This configuration is clearly shown in two of the factory drawings. The odd thing is, my factory photos of the TC show the carbs fitted with left and right-handed lids. I can't imagine them reverting back - except for cost cutting reasons - they then may have had second thoughts and reintroduced the left and right-handed set up. Or, the situation could have been a simple supply issue - with early cars carrying the double right-handed lids until the left were available again. I do know that having a left-handed lid for the rear makes the removal of the lid much easier - as the fork for the needle valve will not complicate removal of the lid. Interesting questions concerning the details. Thanks again |
