MG TD TF 1500 - NEED Help Ignition Switch

I got the ignition/light switch out of the dash thinking this was the problem. Put an ohmmeter on the switch and when I turned the switch on I got continuity and got the same when I turned the light switch on. But when I wired the lights directly to the hot wire I do not get any lights. Also when I wired the hot wire to the wire going back to the fuel pump and coil and I get the same thing. I have verified that I have 12v on the hot wire going to the switch, which would be on the A lug on the switch.
I am stumped and not being the best mechanic makes it even more fustrating.
Hoping to fix before my knee operation Thursday. Will accept any and all ideas.
Thanks for everyone's help.

jeff, not having a good ground does strange things to an electrical circuit. how are all of your connections? have you traced your wires and compared them to a correct schematic? regards, tom

After hot wiring around the ignition/light switch, every which way I knew how, and checking every wire and connection with an ohm meter, I sat in the car not knowing what to do. I started tapping my finger over the top of the ammeter and low and behold the fuel pump started clicking. Don't I love it when things heal themselves.

Better pull the ammeter and check the connections and posts ... its weird to take out... mine had no back clamp, just little 'bend' tabs!!! A long screwdriver worked well!!!
