MG TD TF 1500 - need muffler reccomendation

restoring 1954 mgtf. Installed muffler that came with the car when I bought it in parts: was stored since 1978. It has no holes but it is very loud. I need a reccomendation for muffler that eats noise and pollution.
Ed Eastman

Ed,

Take the muffler to a large auto supply and have them match it up length and opening size. You can also restuff the batting inside if you are so inclined. I've heard of people being successful in placing fiberglass batting into a muffler case.

Unfortunately, without a catalyst, no muffler will reduce pollution, and may even cause some if they have excessive back pressure.

The original muffler was round, and had offset holes from the centerline.

Contrary to many people I have conversed with in the past, a muffler is an engine noise filter. It does nothing to reduce pollutants. Many times I have heard "needs a new muffler" as a car passes pouring out white, blue or black smoke. No muffler on earth is going to correct a blown head gasket, a bad valve seal, worn rings, an overly rich fuel mixture, or a bad set of spark plugs. It will smoke just as bad with a new muffler as with the old.

When I bought my 1952 TD Mark II, it had been fitted with a glass-pack style muffler. As the whole systen was deteriorating, I elected to replace the entire exhaust system with a stainless kit from Moss. No problem with installation. Since the old system was not right, I needed to fiddle with it a while to make everything fit correctly, but it all fit together and the car sounds like it did when new.

ED, when I put Lazarus on the road in 1995 I installed a stainless system from Abingdon Spares. It's still doing its thing. And sounds great, IMHO.

I replaced mine (TF#1260) with a BELL stainless steel system from England. Fit like a glove and less expensive than Moss'. The end result is a very nice resonant tone.

I have the Moss Stainless one and am very happy with it. The whole exhaust system went on without having to bend or alter it, and it has been on for a couple of years now and is holding up. Sounds great. Not too loud, but still has a good throaty sound.

It is correct that a muffler does not reduce pollution, however by carefully tuning the carbs you can reduce the amount of CO to somewhat less than 5%, which for a car that age is pretty good.

Perhaps he meant noise in the car while driving, and the noise pollution that the neighbors have to endure.
Tom

Oh, that noise is a real music!

I and many of our club members have installed the Moss muffler system and it is great. A little throaty but not to loud. As for pollution, this is a 50 year of car and the system was not designed for cat. converters and such. Drive it and enjoy it..

There is a guy in Sweden, Bjarne Bergengren, who wrote in the Octagon Car Club Bulletin that he has installed a cat on a TC. Of course I won't do it - actually in Switzerland it is certainly forbidden, as are seat belts!
