MG TD TF 1500 - Negative earth?
I have to confess that when I took the battery out of my car I never thought to check the polarity. All cars are negative earth, right? It seems not! Deikis's thread led me to check the wiring diagramme in the workshop manual which shows positive earth. Can anyone please tell me how to check that my 1954 TF hasn't been converted? More things to worry about! Thanks AJ |

Hi AJ, your battery leads should show you which way round it was.If not then just polarize it pos earth anyway.Just connect battery up flash from the battery neg to field connection on the regulator for a fraction of a second, job done.If you want to use any modern gear like satnav then connect up battery the other way round and flash from the positive. The original fuel pump and clock are not polarity sensitive Ray TF2884 |

An easier way is to reconnect the battery with jumper cables. Turn ON the headlights, if the ammeter goes toward "+" the battery is backwards. Reconnect with other polarity and the ammeter should now go towards "-". This is the simplist test I can think of that will positively determine which way it was wired. Cheers, Bob |

If the fuel pump and ignition are electronic, you might want to disconnect them while trying to sort out the polarity. Could save a bunch of money. Bill |
