MG TD TF 1500 - New Engine Start up
Afer a couple of years I think after one more weekend of serious work I should be able to start my rebuilt engine (early TD - 1950). I know there have been many threads on this subject but until now I have not kept up with them. I want to start the engine before I put the tub on the chassis. I plan to tie the fuel pump into the carbs and use a container for the fuel supply. I will not have the wiring harness in place and will have the ignition run solely from the battery and will rig up a solenoid for the starter. Do you guys see any problems with this approach? I used plenty of assembly lube (I hope!) and oil when I assembled the engine. I packed the oil pump with petroleum jelly. I have a spin-on oil filter/adapter. Now, what pitfalls should I be aware of? I know there have been articles related to building oil pressure before the engine is cranked, etc. I assure you all comments/suggestions will be digested as with all the $$ in that engine I want to do my best to see that it is started properly. Thanks. |

Spin the eng. over w/ spark plugs removed untill you have oil pressure.Double check ign. timing & spark plug order.[Make sure the dist. is not 180 deg out, w/ plugs removed check for compression @ #1 plug hole & turn eng. w/ a socket, place thumb near plug hole. Or just check rocker arms on #1 when #1 is @ TDC.If cam & lifters are new, run @ 1500 rpm for 20 min. Other wise the lifters might chatter over the lobe & wear them both out very quickly.A fire extinguisher, just in case... Happy MotterinG |
