MG TD TF 1500 - New Factory Photos

Ian Ailes shared with us some exciting factory photos he obtained. They appear to be of 1950 TD's. Mostly chassis pictures but a few completed cars.

I have purposefully left these pictures in their full resolution so you can scroll all the juicy details to your heart's content.

You'll have to copy/paste the url because my browser forces the https.

Chris - many of the pictures listed but not reproduced are of interest - how does one obtain files of these images for study - NOT for publication? Is there any way you can get scans of all the images you list, in order to have a really comprehensive archive?

The ones at the bottom that are listed you can obtain from BHMT. Give them the ID number and they will give you a quote.

When I got them eons ago that size was pretty big for the internet. Now it's only practical for indexing.

Outstanding photographs Chris!
Are there also TF photos?

Really terrific Chris. Answers some long standing questions. I'm with Tom. Makes me want to see the remaining pics. Maybe if someone wants to take it on we could raise the necessary dosh through the BBS. If it's not too pricey I would contribute towards the cost of one. Maybe others could do the same? A few quick observations:

2 & 5 Both float bowl lids are right hand.
4 The rear axle brake line install is pretty rough.
4 Possible TD diff stencil?
6 Location of radiator plate clearly shown.
6 & 8 Branch pipe appears to be engine colour.
6 & 8 Engine stabilizer appears to be unpainted.
6 Bend in radiator stay is clearly evident
6 & 7 Fuel overflow pipes clearly shown over the engine bracket
7 Wiring cover & clip detail on battery cable.
7 Air cleaner lid gap at least 1/2".
7 No evidence of fuel line secured to bulkhead.
7 Later car as oil filler cap chain on right hand side.

Even if we got the pictures by buying them, we would have to get permission from BHMT to post them. I am afraid to ask again as they could take back what they gave me before.

If anyone has a contact there that would be the first place to inquire.

The pic of the US Army Sergeant receiving his new car was taken outside the former Morris Garages showrooms in St Aldate's, Oxford. The Police Station was on the opposite side of the road.

Tom, you can just right click then choose "Save As" and save them yourself. Is there really a copyright issue here?

My interest is in seeing the photographs that are NOT reproduced, just listed.

Chris - I would offer some $ if you could get some kind of quote from Gaydon on costs for posting the remainder of the images (lots, I know...). I suppose there is no way to get them enlarged at all, or with more detail?

Photos C036336 - 9 should be labelled "Southfield Golf Course / Club", but is now known as Oxford Golf Club.

Photos C034821 & 5 were taken in front of Admiralty Arch, SW corner of Trafalgar Square.
Photos C034822 & 3 were taken outside the gates to Buckingham Palace with the Queen Victoria memorial in the background of one.
These locations are at opposite ends of The Mall in London.

Dave: Thanks for the heads up. I fixed the typo of Southfield but left it as it was.

I updated the others.

The history of the BMHT pictures was that way back in 1999 when I first started the website I asked them for permission to post a few pictures from their collection. They graciously allowed me to and sent a list of all the photos they had in their collection as well as a few more samples. This is why you see blank entries.

We agreed to use the page to sort of promote their collection for people to contact them directly for any photos they wanted to obtain. They actually used to post more of these pictures on their own website too but it's a tiny fraction today what it was in 1999.

As far as copyright is concerned: Who knows. For example many of us feel the copyright laws allow us to copy and distribute items because of old timeframes and/or death or disappearance of the original copyright owner but this is not true. The laws are complex and copyrights can seem to go on forever, trading hands etc.

One thing we do have going for us is that our only purpose in obtaining and showing the pictures is for research, but publishing them on the internet does enable others to more unscrupulously use the content for their own purposes.

I can try to reconnect with BHMT and see if they want to revisit the arrangement we had, but my personal experience these days says we will probably lose what we have if I do. The world at large is getting more isolated and protective IMHO.

Ok, so who knew the seat adjuster was called a Chapman mechanism? I didn't.

On the question of copyright Chris, if the pics were identified as copyright on the image itself the way that Dave Braun does, that may well satisfy them. Obviously anyone else who used them would be aware that they were breaching copyright and would do so at their peril. As your site has no commercial aspect and is there purely for research as an aid to originality in restoration, I'd like to think that they would be sympathetic. Be great to see the 'missing' pics.
