MG TD TF 1500 - new laystall head on a xpag
By adding a new laystall alum. alloy head to my xpag engine how much h.p. increase would i get? thanks MICHAEL |

That’s kind of a shotgun question. Too many variables. It’ll depend upon the porting you choose, valve sizes, CR, carbs and jetting, fuel used. Camshaft choice, combustion chamber shaping, NA or SC. engine size (stroke and bore) piston design. Exhaust system Etc etc. What do you want to accomplish? Bill Chasser |

The best contemporary test of a L-L head is this article in the January 1954 Road and Track: https://picclick.com/Road-Track-Article-Reprint-from-January-1954-302711372549.html#&gid=1&pid=1 Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Michael, TF 1891 came to me with a L-L head, split manifold, dual SS exhaust, up-rated cam, large carbs, etc., all installed on what is apparently a TD/C engine (not original to the car). I have no idea about HP, but I will say that it feels (and sounds) a bit rowdy to me, compared with my MGA. I don't know if my comment helps you decide about installing a L-L head or not, but it seems logical to me that additional components may be desirable. Good luck! Frank TF1891 |

Nice to see that the L-L-equipped engine fits into a TF, and I suspect it fits only because the front air filter been reduced in height? If you let me have the engine number I can tell you in which car it was originally fitted. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom, the L-L I have had the port side shaved and has the same width of an original head. Presumably so the side covers could be used with a stock air pipe. But I have never had the manifold side bonnet panel in place to know for sure. |

No, Tom. Neigher of my air filters has been altered. That's an optical illusion. My current engine number is 20670, apparently from car TD/C20330 or so I've been told. My original engine number was XPAG/TF/31613. I don't know what happened to that engine. I'd love to know anything that you find out. Frank TF 1891 |

Frank - I was probably the one who told you the engine was originally in TD/C20330, and I have just confirmed this. I am afraid I have no information on where your original engine may have ended up. In all the years I have been working with T-type cars, only once have I been able to re-connect an owner with his original engine when it came up for for sale on eBay. Unfortunately, he had absolutely no interest in it!
I thought your front air filter was cut down based on the number of rows of holes; I probably can't see that well any longer! Best, Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I think you're right about telling me where my engine originated. And, you may also be right about the filter. I have had them off a number of times and never really noticed any difference in the two filters. I'm gonna hafta look again, when I'm in the shop this afternoon. I'm about to install my new master cylinder, and will likely wind up replacing the wheel cylinders, too. I tried to blow out the lines with low volume compressed air and all but one seemed to clear. Haven't checked the cylinders yet.

Brake hoses collapse internally, so nothing is externally visible. If you go through the wheel cylinders, consider also replacing the hoses. Cheap insurance that nothing else will go wrong!= Tom Lange MGT Repair |
