MG TD TF 1500 - New TD owner

Hello,

I am the proud owner of a 1953 MGTD with 53,178 actual miles. The vehicle was given to me as a Christmas gift in 2004 from my mother in-law after a complete restoration at the cost of 35,000$ The vehicle i believe is a MKII it is also right side drive. can anyone give me information on were to look up and decipher the vehicle build plate data.

Thank You.

Tony-
Post the ID numbers which should be on the info plate attached to the front of the tool box. The engine number should also be on a brass tag (also stamped into the block above the brass tag) on the lower right front side of the block. The chassis number should also be stamped into the front left dog iron, under the front of the fender where it attaches to the chassis. That is the starting point. On a thread below, you will find a link to the TD factory records. Welcome.

Tony... welcome to the wonderful world of T cars... when you get the number info, would you mind entering it at: http://www.niagarabritishcarclub.org/mgtnumbers/numbers.html There is a link at the bottom of the page to a data base...Also a lot of info on various 'Car' numbers.
Hmmmm... not exactly a typical 'Mother in Law'... where can I find one like that?

Does your wfe have any unmarried sisters? Wait, that will not work, I am married. Ahhhh, er, ah, does your mother-in-law want to adopt a 59 year old son?
Congratulations to both you and your mouther-in-law and have fun with the car.

Tony,

That sounds like one gorgeous TD. Lucky guy. RHD Mark IIs are quite rare, as the Mark II was made primarily for the US market. If its a legitimate Mark II it is so marked with identifing badges on the front of each bonnet panel. The car plate is less clear. Other indicators include Andrex friction-type shocks on the front suspension (and sometimes on the rear suspension as well). Twin SU fuel pumps, and very rarely, the Mark II plate on the rear bumper face. And all Mark IIs had 1½" H4 SUs.

Another good bet, is to join a chapter of the New Englnd MG T Register (http://www.nemgt.org). There are two chapters in VA. One in Virginia Beach and another in Richmond. Check the web-site for more info.

Don't forget to send a picture to Gord Lawson, so we can all enjoy your car.

Happy motoring.

Tony,

What's the number stamped into the left front dumb-iron? - that part of the chassis furthest to the front, and onto which the front bumper is bolted?

Sometimes they're hard to see as crud can build up over the years. But if your TD is freshly restored, then you should have no trouble reading the stamped numbers.

Hopefully those numbers are 2-7-7-4-0. If your stamped brass plate on the bulkhead differs from the number on the dumb-iron, you could have a problem with a stolen car.

Just check to be absolutely sure.

I just went and checked its the same number that's on the brass plate, TD 27740.

Thanks
