MG TD TF 1500 - No ground connection of gas tank

Dear all,
I coated recently the inside of my fuel tank with POR 15. It was an easy job, cleaning, preparing and coating was done in a couple of hours according the detailed instruction I have had in hand. The drying process needs a lot of time and it was strongly recommended to drain the surplus paint before drying.
Placed the tank in such a position that the paint could drip out thru the drain plug and the fuel line connection plug.
After three days I cleaned the thread portion using a screw tap. Unfortunately, after assembly I forgot to check the electric connection between fuel line and tank. The result now is, that the fuel level warning light doesn’t work.
What’s to do? Sure I can remove the fuel line again and try to install it again in order to get a better connection. Before I can do so, I have to drain the tank and do not like it.
My Idea is now to wire the fuel tank float unit somewhere to ground.
Any comments?
Cheers,
Guenter

Guenter How come your fuel line doesn't make the ground connection? Is the POR on the threads? If I remember correctly the screws holding the fuel float go through and will spill gas (unless the tank is pretty empty). Seems as though the connection to the fuel line is suspect if there is no electrical connection through it. You can of course verify that all you need is a ground connection by touching a grounded wire to the bolts holding the end plates on the tank. If the light lights then a ground (earth) connection is all you need.
Keep us posted on your tests and results. We can all learn from each others tests and results.

Bob, Ithink the sender could still be insulated due to the gasket and the sealer? I ran a separate ground wire from one of the sender mounting screws and spliced it into a black harness ground wire. Simpler to run it to a bolt on the chassis somewhere. Make sure you use soldered terminal ends, and get bright shiny metal under the contact. David DuBois has a great write-up on prepping and making electrical connections somewhere. George

Yes, I would bet that your treatment resulted in a ground loss. Like Bob says, you can add a ground wire. My TF with the fuel pump mounted in the rear came with the ground wire in place, going to a multiple grounding point beneath the spare tire. In these cars, the fuel pump prevents grounding via the fuel line, so a wire was added. A similar situation can be created when an in-line fuel filter is added to TD's at the rear, I believe.
