MG TD TF 1500 - NTG Disc Brake install

I ordered the NTG disk brake kit and received it in the US in 3 days. The total cost with shipping was
£ 740. The kit was complete and other than supplying my own Loctite and shims. There are no directions but if you have experience with disassembly and assembly of the TD brakes you should have no problem. NTG did say that they would most likely include instructions in the future. They are sending me shims to center the rotors at no cost and will probably include them in the future.

After disassembly the first step was to install the caliper bracket. It is held in place with four 9/16“bolts and nuts. After packing the bearings with grease and inserting the original bearing spacer, I installed them in the hub. Then I installed the supplied oil seal. Now it was time to attach the rotor to the hub. It is held in place with four 9/16” bolts and nuts.

I placed the original spacer on the spindle and installed the rotor hub assembly. I torqued the axel nut to 40 ft lbs and then to the next cotter key opening. I then installed the caliper which is held in place with two 5/8” bolts. A locking tab is supplied. There are no torque values supplied with the kit so I used my best judgement. After installing the caliper I saw that it was slightly off center from the rotor. I consulted NTG and they recommended shims to bring it into alignment. They are sending me shims at no cost. I used stainless steel washers until NTGs shims arrive. The washers were a perfect thickness to center the rotor. The rubber brake hose is installed exactly like the original and I had no trouble attaching it to the original lines. Two copper washers are supplied. The wheels are held on with supplied 19 mm nuts so a suitable socket needs to be added to the tool kit.

I did not install any proportioning valves or modify the master cylinder. NTG has been using the same hydraulic system on a TD with disc brakes for a long time without any modifications and have had no problems.

Was it worth it? The pedal pressure required to stop at various speeds dropped considerably. Don’t expect a modern ABS experience, however. But the improvement over the stock drums is well worth it in my opinion. The customer service from NTG was outstanding. They recommend calling rather than emails and that proved a good choice since other questions and topics popped up during our conversation. I’m very satisfied with the conversion and would highly recommend it.

I apologize for the wrong company name in my title it should be NTG.

And of course I have no financial interest in the company, just a satisfied customer.
