MG TD TF 1500 - numbers again
Just recently I noticed at one TD which has never been restored that the chassisnumber was also painted on the inside of the bonnet. Was taht common practice ? Any more examples known ? |

I can't tell for the MG TD Bas. However; with the early sidescreen MG midgets this was common practice. Even in 1963 (the year mine was built), the bodies arrived at Abingdon fully assembled and painted. To enable easy installment of the drivetrain, the bonnets were removed at the start of the production line. Later, when the car was almost finished, the bonnet was fixed to exactly the same car from which it came because its body number was written in crayon on the rear tonneau deck AND on the inside of the bonnet. So body and bonnet colour always remained a matching pair ! It's easy to imagine this method was used on the earlier TD production too. Hope this helps. Nick, 52TD/63Midget/74MGB |
