MG TD TF 1500 - obtaining a new title

I purchased a car that I was going to use for parts. I've decided to now make it a driver. When I bought it I only recieved a bill of sale and no title. Story goes that the car was an attraction to get buyers into the store and it was removed when to a few spots befor I got it. I now cannot locate the bill of sale & the garage does not exist where I purchased it from.
How much of a hassle is it to obtain a title?

We also had that same issue, we taked to our AMA - Alberta Motor Association, they told us some options. We had to swear a declaration that the car wasn't worth over $1,500 dollars when we got it. We also knew that it had been registered in Alberta some 30+ years ago. so the records are not on the database (86 is newest) So we did the declaration, then with the new appraisal we got insurance and then they issued us registration.

I really don't know what the laws are where you are.

V.W.,

Many states have a specialist at their DMVs whose job is to help people with the unusual problems regarding registrations etc. Most of the clerks and their supervisors don't have the experience or the authority to deal with the unusual. You might want to check with the NY DMV to see if the have such a specialist that can help. We have such a guy here in California and he is a busy man. I invited him to one of our club meetings and he talked to the membership and answered a lot of questions.

Give it a try.

You really only have a few options. The best is to try and get a copy of the title from the previous owner. Many states will search and send duplicate copies of the title but only to the owner registered last with that title in thir own home state. Another option is to use a title broker, who will sell you a new title after you attest that it is not stolen. It raises the question of stolen vehicles, changing VIN numbers and a whole host of other illegial activities that I shudder to even think about. A quick google search came up with several companies, one of which, broadwaytitle.com charges $170.00 for the service. Understand that I have no idea how this works and I have never used any of these companies, but in a pinch it way suffice.
Good luck,
Rob (with an original title for my 1950 TD #0533)
