MG TD TF 1500 - Off topic - AC kit needed for Daimler DS420

Hi everyone:

Need some help with old Jag air conditioning. We're thinking about buying a pretty nicely done mid-70's Daimler DS420 for a wedding using wedding cars tonbridge car/special events limousine service. The car is really nicely restored, but has no AC.

Do any of you know where I might start looking for a whole AC kit? These big old girls are based on the 420G/Mark X chassis/engine/driveline - 4.2 with a Borg Warner [I think] 3-speed automatic.

Thanks for any and all leads.

Dave

Give this a look-over Dave. Always pricey.

A friend has the same model and the original AC fills half the trunk...you might be better finding a unit out of a N/A car and adapting it...or an aftermarket unit....?

I no longer have a Jaguar but when I did, I found this forum to be very helpful.
Here is the Daimler section-

It appears that that direct link is too long or something- try here and click on the Daimler section.

I have used this company in Tampa Florida several times for complete units to fit various MG's.
They are good.

Dave,

Get yourself a copy of 'Street Rod' magazine. The rodders are very inventive and need to have neat, compact kits.

The main problem with after-market A/C units for cars that weren't designed for them, has always been where to put the condenser.

Have a look at www.southernrods.com as just one example - there are several.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your advice. My concern at this point is whether the Daimler is even the right car for the job. The car will be used as a wine tour and special events car in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, where July and August temperatures regularly hit 35ºC or better. And to subject those Jag mechanicals to that kind of heat - particularly when there are extra AC BTU's involved - it may not be the right car.

So it may be that we look for an early 60's long-wheelbase Fleetwood - it wouldn't have the wow factor of the big Jag, but it's likely to be more reliable if it's been soaking in the sun for a few hours while the tourists are inside sampling the latest Okanagan Merlot. Plus the AC could be fixed at the local GM shop - a big plus.

But, dammit, to have that big twincam six, a pair of SU's, that walnut dash, and that luxurious back seat - I'm not sure I want to pass that up.

Thanks, all of you,

Dave

The first Daimler my friends bought had a bad engine...it was swapped out for a Chev V8 ... with A/C.... believe they have had no problems? The others all are stock and our summers I would think are the same as yours?

Dave. I realize the WOW factor of the bid six. I have installed several 350 chevrolet power plants in various Jaguars from 1974 XJ6 to XJS models. It is surprisingly easy. My wife has driven her 1986 XJS with v-8 power since I installed it in 1999. It gets plenty hot here in florida.
That Daimler takes the cake. V-8 it and enjoy.
Gordon C is correct. The street rodders install those units and they even have heat within the same unit if wanted.
Check out CENTRAL CONVERSIONS they convert many. What they do best is change the frame and all running gear of Rolls royce to Chevrolet.
