MG TD TF 1500 - Oil bath air cleaner TD MK11
I am looking for details of the oilbath air cleaner as fitted to MG TD MK11. I know it is 9 inch diameter. What is the size of the throat where it fits onto the alluminium manifold? is it the same size as the regular TD 7 inch one uses or is it a bigger throat size? Is the top section domed with AC filter embossed on it or is it flat. Appreciate any details or photos which may help. Thanks. Frank |

Frank, I have a MkII air cleaner manifold (the aluminum part), but not the actual oil bath air cleaner. The manifold has the same diameter throat at the top where it would mate with the air cleaner, but larger openings at the carb openings than the standard air cleaner, in order to match up with 1 1/2 carbs. I also have the carbs (to be rebuilt). I wish I could find a proper Mark II oil bath air cleaner. There is a guy on ebay who reproduced the decal for the MkII air cleaner and sells them there reasonably every once in a while. Ira |

Frank The oil bath is the same design for both models. Moss UK show one in their current parts list priced at 130 pounds sterling plus mailing. They can be contacted at moss-europe.co.uk. I found one through the MG website last year, the manifold and canister cost me 120 pounds sterling. Mick Cook 52 TD |

Frank, I have an early 51 MK II withe 1 1/4" Carbs and a regular size Air Cleaner. I believe 1 1/2 Carbs were fitted later. What is your TD/C Number? George Merson TD/C 5905 |

Frank Do you mean a genuine TDMk11 or a TD2?. If it is the former I always understood that they had 11/2" SUs and pancake air filters as per the TF. The TD2 I had in NZ also had 11/2" carbs with pancake air filters,in fact it would appear that a lot of TD2s had this set up. I recently swapped my PB for a 1953 TD2 and that also has this setup. I have never actually seen a inlet manifold that fits 1 1/2" SUs,however, you haven't said what size carbs are fitted to your car. Have you still got the J2? Frank: If you contact me off line, I will try to send some photos of the std v. MKII pot. As to your question, yes the std will fit on a MKII manifold, (that is how I inadvertantly let my MKII manifold go some 20 years ago). As to the MKII v. TD2, 'never ending story', this has been hashed about several times. To the best of my recollections: The defining difference between a MKII and a std TD, (TD2 essentially refers to an 8" clutch), are: 1 1/2" carbs, with attendant oil bath and manifold, large (TF) valves, raised compression - 9.1, bulge in right side bonnet panel to accomodate the larger air intake mainfold, late MKIIs had a MKII badge on the side of the bonnet and there were very late ones with a MKII badge on the rear bumper, andrex shocks at all four corners, dual fuel pumps, 'sport coil', TF rear end gearing and a clean curved grab handle for the passenger. As an aside, most would have been LHD, (mine is RHD having gone to Hong Kong), to appeal to the US market, as UK was in the export or die mode, I may have missed something here, but, oh well. In opposition, they never had bucket seats, nor pancake (Yolkes) air filters, AS STANDARD ISSUE. Paul |

Paul is absolutely correct on all counts. I have a true MkII. MkIIs also have dual SU fuel pumps. The rear is a 4.875, which allows crusiing at 55-60 more comfortably. Mine has the 1 1/2 carbs and a larger inlet on the mainfold to accomodate the larger carbs, but is missing the MkII (alas) air cleaner, having come with a std air cleaner (which does fit the MkII manifold). However, as I had a rebuilt set of 1 1/4 carbs, I fitted them along with aftermarket pancake air filters, which do clear the bonnet. This is temporary, until i rebuild the MkII carbs. I am also missing the andrex shocks; so if anyone has some, let me know. Best, Ira |
