MG TD TF 1500 - Oil consumption and new engine

Hi All.

Took the TD with it's new engine out for a nice drive today. Actually went to a friends house who has a TD. When I got home, I noted the oil was nearly at the bottom of the dip stick.

No great leaks under the car, but it does appear I am blowing some oil throught the side valve cover tube. No smoke that I am noteing.

What have others experienced as far as oil consumption in a new engine?

Half a quart through drips, leaks, slight burning at idle in about 1000 miles!

bruce, my experience mirrors what gordon wrote. new engine, 1000 plus miles and the quantity is still right at max. i have not added any oil since the intial run oil and 500 mile oil change. so 1000 miles and have not added. regards, tom

My engine uses/drips about 1/3 quart in 1000 miles.

Guess I have 9-10,000 miles on Lazarus since rebuilding the engine. At the most I might add a pint of oil during the annual 3,000 miles.

BEC,

Not a big deal - at least, not for the first couple of thousand miles.

A new engine with roughed bores is bound to let quite a bit pass from the sump into the combustion chamber. And, ditto new valve guides.

As the others have indicated, expect to leave some on the floor each time you shut off your engine.

Expect to consume abt. 1 quart per 1,000 miles for the first 2,000 miles; therafter abt. ½ quart; anything less, is a miracle. Leave a farthing for St. Jude!

Very possible I did not have the car totally topped off. Going to do the first oil change this weekend after the initial breakin so I will assure it is full and then see how she goes.

Bruce, if you have a late engine, i.e., with the finned sump, the system capacity is seven quarts. That includes the filter. The markings on the dipstick are not at all accurate.
