MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Gauge Leather Washer
Can someone please tell me the precise OD & ID of the leather washer that seals the fitting at the back of the oil gauge? I have plenty of leather off cuts from the tool roll pockets & straps & from the top of the door pockets that I've made. I'd like to punch out a couple. I know I can get them from the States but with you know who's shipping costs to Australia being what they are, I'm better off buying a couple of punches & doing the job myself. That way I'd also know that they'd actually fit. I checked the half dozen 'oil gauge' threads in the archive but no joy there. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

OD is 0.351", ID - no idea but about 0.125" at a guess. The part was used on all Smiths oil gauges and also a fibre washer used instead of leather. These should be easily available locally. Same part is used as the washer under the pegs on the body for hood fastening. |

Thanks Chris. I'll check it out. As long as the ID clears the oil opening to the gauge I should be OK. The fibre washer will be the easiest option. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I used a nitrile o ring with good results. Easier to source than leather washers. Regards Tim TD12524 |

Checked out 'O' rings & the closet I could find here to 0.351" is 0.343". The imperial dimensions expressed as a fraction for this size are; Size 009: 11/32" (0.343") OD x 7/32" ID x 1/16" cross section. Material is Nitrile. They are available with a larger cross section. Any suggestions on the cross section Tim or Gerard? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter - The 1/16" cross section works just fine - That is what has been on the oil pressure gauge in our TD foe many years with no problems. Cheers - Dave |

and if you want to be original, I have some leather washers for precisely this job. Let me know if I can help. |

Hi Ian. I'm only concerned with visible originality. Where technology shows a clear improvement on the original solution, I'm all for it, as long as it isn't seen. Can you measure the ones that you have please? Keen to see what the OD & especially what the ID is. Nitrile 'O' rings are not that easy to come by here. Just one supplier in Sydney that I could find. More readily available in some kits but individually they are much more difficult to locate. I have a leather hole punch that should take care of the ID so I'll probably just have to buy one for the OD. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I'll get the micrometre out and get back to you. From my experience, once they are pre-soaked in light oil, they stay in place and don't distort or fall out when you next undo the nut. They are my seal of choice for this job (and for the blower gauge on the MG J3) |

I used a nitrile O ring on mine and it hasn't leaked yet, hopfully it never will. PJ |

Decided on the Nitrile 70 'O' rings. Hydraulic Seals @ Wetherill Park are sending me about 40 as they have a minimum charge of $10. This is 39 more than I need so if anybody wants one just send me a stamped addressed envelope & I'll post you one. No charge of course. (Just shout me a beer when you're in Sydney). Thank you all for your assistance. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

The leather one is 3/10 in diameter and just under 1/10 in hole. The great advantage is that they are easy to insert, stay in place and don't skew or fall out like the rings. These roll across the floor to some dark corner, and pick up grit and dust if you can find them, though with 40 to hand that is not going to be today's problem! When you need one, having lost the last O ring, give me a shout. |
