MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Line Banjo Bolt Washers

Am just about ready to fire up the engine from 'the53'. Ordered a new set of oil line banjo bolt washers from A/S. The package arrived containing 8 washers, four of the crush type (as expected) and 4 flat copper washers. Called the folks at A/S and asked about the extras. They seem to imply that one needs to install both types. This is news to me. The WSM only gives a number (#117) to the washer that's in contact with the banjo bolt. It shows a washer between the oil pipe and the head, but doesn't give it a number. Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks, Bud

I think you have 4 extra washers.
George Butz

Two on each line on the oil filter, two on each bolt on the block = 8 washers. I use the flat one's on the surface of the filter and the engine and the squash ones on the bolt head.

Bud,
I have just resolved an oil leak where the oil come out of the block and up to the head. With the washers you have, I would suggest that the crush type go between the block and the bango and the flat between the bango and the bolt. This arrangment solved my problem and it looks like you have two complete sets. Lucky you eh.

Bruce, this a late engine. The filter isn't involved. These are on the line that runs from the block to the head.

Hopefully, I'll be spinning it over looking for oil pressure tomorrow. Think I'll stick with the crush ones all the way around. Thanks George & George. Bud

It's now tomorrow! Just wanted to close this out by saying that I had that blessed experience today, a reading on an oil pressure gauge. No leakage at the banjos. If all goes well I hope to fire up the engine tomorrow. Bud

Attaway Bud. Good to hear!

Please excuse me,, but it gives me a shudder every time some one uses the phrase similar to "hope to FIRE up the engine" when speaking about a T Type....

Excuse me -- I meant to say that I was anticipating that the accumulation of XPAG components was going to emulate an Otto cycle device. Unfortunately, such was not the case. I was using a Dave Braun remote fuel tank system connected to the end of the fuel line that would be connected to a fuel tank, if one were there. Couldn't get fuel to the carbs. Eventually discovered that the fuel line (last used in 1972) was clogged at the sharp bend at the tank end. Application of a blue wrench and a piece of 12 gauge copper wire allowed me to break the jam. A 100 psi air blast from the pump end cleared the line. And then I discovered the fuel pump was just making noise, nut sucking. Maana. OSH time. Bud

Bingo!! Just happened to have a West German fuel pump that hadn't been used in 20+ years. Had 'borrow' Lazarus' carburetor fuel lines. Rigged up my Dave Braun fuel tank, cleaned and set the 39 year old points, set the timing to TDC, jury-rigged a bungi cord to set some choke, gave the idle screw a couple of twists, hooked some alligator clip wires to the coil and the fuel pump. Pushed in the back side of the starter switch -- within 2 seconds I had:

Must admit that I had rebuilt the carburetors about 8 years ago (for the DPO). Must admit, it sounds great! Bud

Nice!

It's amazing how these things sleep until someone gives them a nudge!
Dave Braun

Must admit that a head and some new pistons might help some, but it was the Dave Braun wiring that put it all together:

Just joshing. Dave's site has been an immense help in this monster project. Thanks, Dave. Bud
