MG TD TF 1500 - Operating Temperature

MGTD -- what is an acceptable temperature range -- my car runs between 80 and 90 degrees when warmed up. Is this acceptable and withen range?

Russ,
That's about perfect I'd say...

Hi Russ, Those temps are fine (presuming C, not F!). As long as it warms up and doesn't boil you are fine. Did you ever sell the black TD? George

No - I lowered the price to $8200 , had a few lookers but no buyers. I have been driving the restored 1952 and really enjoying it. as I look at the 1953 it really will not be that difficult to restore. As you saw, it appears the underside and mechanicals are all done so just becomes a matter of doing body and trim. Of course, since it has been sitting for so long the brakes and clutch master cylinders will need attention -- rebuild kits are fairly inexpensive. Since I already have a restored TD my first choice is to sell but if I do not the 53 will just become my next project after complete the TR6. Too bad a buyer will not pop up as this is a great find and even better base car for restoration.

Just think, when they first came out there was no temperature gauge, so people just drove them. If there was no steam, everything was fine. With modern antifreeze you won't boil until you get right up to the 100 PSI mark or past that even.

Then came the motometer...and after that the temperature gauge... and everything went down hill! LOL. Of course you do have to make sure your coolent level stays stablized, topping up too high only lets the coolent overflow.

I was told years ago by Dean Aboudara, now passed on but an very knowledgable TD collector and owner to put a piece of tape over the temperature gauge and drive the car unless you saw steam coming from the radiator.

Cheers, David...

When I first picked up my TD in 1951, there was no temp gauge included with the oil gauge. I drove it for years without a thought about the temperature. I found an old temp gauge my Dad had for his Model T and installed it on the TD, just to see how the temperature was running in the MG. It is still there, attached to the steering column where, if I look a certain way, I can read the gauge. I do look at it a lot, just because it is there. Is there a message here?
