MG TD TF 1500 - Original TD fuel pump?
Hello, I am in need of procuring an original TD fuel pump (S.U. AUA 25 - I believe). In ebay there is one pump I am bidding for, which is described as "original". The link is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10076&item=1873227349&rd=1 On my request, the seller very kindly supplied additional information: "it is a low pressure pump for a TC TD, not a high pressure for a TF" and that the reference is "S.U. PART No. 4080....." Since I never had an original TD pump in my hands, perhaps you, my friends, can answer: Is that really an original pump, that is an AUA ? If not, could it be installed in the same spot in the engine bay as the original one (suction pump)? Every feedback will be appreciated. Jesus |

Jesus, it looks like a TC/TD pump but also looks like it has been in a junk box for a long time. If you buy it, I think you should plan to rebuild it with a kit of new parts to make sure it is reliable. You might factor that cost into whatever price you finally bid for it. Maybe it would be cheaper to buy a rebuilt one to start with. |

Jesus, You might want to bid on the other pump that's right above the one you're talking about - the aftermarket one. I have one of those and it works perfectly - although the base looks different it mounts exactly the same, and uses the same repair parts. Plus, it doesn't look like anyone else wants it. Gene |

Hello, Thanks to all for your convincing comments. After reading your recommendations, I did not want anymore the pump offered at ebay. However, I had already offered a maximum bid, and until the last minute, nobody outbid me. In the end, I was perhaps so lucky as not to win the bid for that pump. Nevertheless, when purchasing a device in need of restoration, aside from some marginal saving, there is the challenge of reconditioning and bringing it to an as-new condition. This was also a "bonus" (do I sound masochist?) on this pump, of course because I did not need it urgently. Anyway, I think I will contact Burlen in UK or any of the services offering reconditioned pumps. I have just some technical questions on pumps and electricity that I post in a new thread. Jesus, I recently did my pump. It had been in storage since 1974 and looked alot like the one you bought. Now it looks just like new. I changed the plunger, body gasket, points, cap, and washers. I got all of the parts at moss. (except the washers.) The pump body is aluminum and cleans up easily. The coil body is iron or steel, you'll want to bead blast or wire brush it. The biggest challenge was removing the brass fittings. They were frozen in place. I used penetrating oil to free them. The valves are little brass discs. I polished them lightly with 1500 grit sand paper. I tested the pump using a 12volt battery charger and it works great. Good luck! |
