MG TD TF 1500 - Overthinking it once again...
I’ve been so busy with my newly reacquired '78 B that I haven’t really paid much attention to the TF in the last couple of months. Frankly, it’s been too hot to really enjoy it anyway. I’ve turned her over ever few days, but she hasn’t been out of the garage for more than a quick run to the hardware store in over a month. So it’s finally cooling down some, and since last night was date night I figured we’d take the TF into town for our night out. Got in, went through the startup routine, and when I turned the key the fuel pump went crazy—like it was trying to click its way off the firewall. So my first thought is stuck float. Pop the bonnet, and that’s not it. No overflow. Tickle the floats and it's still pumping away like crazy. OK, next. A couple of months ago I posted here about what a disaster my fuel line was—at least four different pieces, including two rubber pieces held on with screw clamps. Clearly, a new line was indicated. Parts were obtained but never installed. Either the line must have finally failed somehow, somewhere, or there’s something wrong with the pump. TF’s not going out on date night—we’ll deal with it Sunday. First things first this afternoon—check the pump. Disconnect main line and run a hose into a jerry can—pump’s fine. So it’s gotta be the line. So up on jack stands and body panels start coming off. Once again I envy TD owners and their easy access. Two hours later all the clamps are removed all the way back to the tank, and it's time to get out the hand siphon to empty the tank so I can disconnect the line. Which is when I learned that the gas tank was empty… Andy TF0537 |

Simple things first Andy, simple things first. That is the mantra of all us lazy guys :-) Cheers - Dave PS you might want to think about fixing your fuel indicator light while installing that new fuel line. |

Dave, Oh, the fuel light works just fine. Fixed that last winter. I knew I was "low"--the light came on during my last drive. Gas station was going to be our first stop on date night. I just didn't take into consideration that firing her up every few days actually used gas... Nope. It's all me on this one. On the plus side, though, I finally got that crappy fuel line replaced. "On the plus side, though, I finally got that crappy fuel line replaced." Every cloud has a silver lining. Hope you and your wife were able to take a pleasant drive in the TF. Cheers - Dave |
